The divisional police officer of Onikan police station, in Lagos, Mr Adekunle Awe who was accused of raping a woman in his office wept in the cell, on Good Friday.
The woman Idowu Akinwumi, 31, accused Awe of raping and threatening her, before allegedly extorting N30,000 from her and five other suspects, on April 15.
The victim who was said to be a cook in an eatery was arrested and taken to the police station after her boss reported that she brought in a strange man to sleep over in the restaurant. She and five other people were arrested.
A source at the state police command headquarters, Ikeja, where Awe was being detained disclosed that he was shedding tears in the cell and blaming his predicament on the devil.
He said the DPO was heard lamenting that the devil brought those suspects to put him in trouble. He prayed that God should intervene in his case and protect his job. He was detained alongside two police inspectors.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar has declared his interest in the case. The Lagos State government led by Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) is also interested in the matter.
Another police source attached to the Special Investigation Bureau at the command headquarters, Ikeja, told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the bureau is investigating the matter and would not leave any stone unturned as it looks into it. He said human rights groups are also interested in the case.
The embattled DPO was described as wicked and corrupt by residents of Tolu part of Ajegunle when he was in charge of Tolu police station several months ago.
