WHEN DID JONATHAN BECOME "BAD MARKET" FOR OUR POLITICAL JOBMEN? : We Didn’t Adopt Jonathan – UPN ... PunchNews
Ahead of the February 14 presidential election, the Unity Party of Nigeria says it has not adopted any presidential candidate.
The National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Sokoto, clarified this in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.
“The Leadership of the Unity Party of Nigeria did not authorised the suspended National Chairman nor direct any official of the party at any level to commit the party to support any presidential candidate,’’ it said.
The suspended UPN National Chairman, Dr Frederick Fasehun, was alleged to have recently endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the poll.
But Sokoto said the party received the news as a great embarrassment to all its leaders and supporters across the world.
“On behalf of the National Executive Committee of our party, I am urging the general public and party leaders to disregard the highest act of irresponsibility of the suspended national chairman.
“It is embarrassing to leaders and supporters of our party all over the country to hear the suspended national chairman dragging the name of our party to ridicule.
“The National Executive Committee, which is the highest organ of the party, has not met to take a decision on the issue of Presidential Election,’’ the statement read in part.
The party frowned at the dictatorial tendencies exhibited by the suspended national chairman and pledged to ensure that due diligence and party discipline were enforced at all levels.
It said that the party was not registered to serve the personal interest of any individual member, citizen or group.
“UPN was not registered to serve or to actualise personal interest of individuals.
“We did not resuscitate UPN for the party to be used in negotiating the N3.5 billion pipeline contract.
“We hasten to warn that Dr Fasehun is on his own’’ for adopting a candidate of his choice.
The statement, therefore, advised members of the party and the general public to disregard the purported endorsement and await further instructions.
