A MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY FROM A COMPASSIONATE HEART : Kano Mosque Blast is sin against God, says Pope Francis ... PMNews

VATICAN-TURKEY-POPE-TRIP
Pope Francis has condemned the triple bomb blasts that ripped through the Grand mosque in Kano during Friday 28 November weekly prayers. The explosions killed over 120 people and injured over 270.
During his historic visit to Turkey, the Catholic Pontiff joined French President Francois Hollande in condemning the attack and has called for a united front against the barbarism of Boko Haram Islamists.
Pope Francis labelled the attack an “extremely serious sin against God”.
In a meeting with Turkish political and religious officials, at the start of his second trip to the Middle East this year, the Pope further urged Muslim leaders to condemn the “barbaric violence” being committed in Islam’s name against religious minorities in Iraq and Syria.
Pope Francis visit is aimed at improving inter-faith ties.

JONATHAN'S IGP MUST HEAR THIS : Impeachment: Anti-Jonathan senators meet today ... PunchNews

Nigeria Senate
The 63 senators who had signed up to remove President Goodluck Jonathan will meet on Monday (today) evening to perfect their   strategy for making it a reality.
One of the coordinators of the impeachment plan, who made this known to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, said the agenda of the meeting would centre on how to handle the case on the floor of the Senate.
But the senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not disclose the venue of the meeting for security reasons.
He said, “All of us will meet tomorrow (Monday) evening to discuss when we are going to move the motion on the floor of the Senate. We have an appreciable number already and I believe that more people will join when they see the seriousness with which we are going about it.
“Some of our colleagues were saying that we don’t have the will to move it (impeachment motion) on the floor. We will soon execute our plans because it is in the best interest of all Nigerians”
Already, the senator representing Yobe South Senatorial District in the upper chamber, Alkali Jajere, and his colleague from Niger North, Ibrahim Musa, have explained their involvement in the planned impeachment moves.
The two senators, in separate interviews on Sunday, said they signed up for the impeachment because of their conviction that Jonathan had engaged in a series of constitutional breaches.
Jajere alleged that the poor handling of the insurgency in the North-East    by the Jonathan administration despite huge sums of money being voted for the military, was deliberate.
He said, “Are we going to wait and continue to tolerate a leader who, cannot stop the daily physical and psychological torture of people in the North-East. The insurgency in the zone is threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria and the earlier we act, the better.’’
Also, Musa alleged that Jonathan government’s “insincerity” in tackling the economic crisis facing   the country was enough grounds to initiate an impeachment move against him.
He said, “The President has been breaching the constitution over the years and we have tolerated it enough. This government has not been implementing the budget and that is why we are having problems with our economy.”
One of the arrowheads of the move to remove Jonathan, on Thursday, showed our correspondent the list containing the signatures of 63 senators.
The source said eight Peoples Democratic Party senators were among the signatories to the planned impeachment notice. There are 109 lawmakers in the Senate.
An All Progressives Congress senator from the North-West, who asked not to be named, told our correspondent that the lawmakers’ major grouse against the President was the manner he had been handling the economic and political affairs of the country.
The senator cited poor implementation of the national budget since 2011, alleged high level of corruption and “gross disregard”   for the legislature at both the federal and state levels as some of the reasons they were angry with Jonathan.

A PERCEPTION SO HARD TO CONTROVERT .. FOR THE RECORDS : Jonathan’s government has failed Nigerians, is culpable in Boko Haram attacks – JNI ... PremiumTimes (SEE FULL PRESS STATEMENT HERE)

Kano central mosque
The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, has declared that “Nigeria is being misgoverned to the Brink”, and accused the federal government of failing in its primary responsibility of providing security for residents.
The group, which is a coalition of Islamic organisations in Nigeria and is headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, also expressed doubts about the government’s role in the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency.
In a statement by its Secretary General, Khalid Aliyu, the group said it has observed a trend of increase in Boko Haram attacks whenever the federal government seeks an extension of emergency rule in the three Northern states affected by the insurgency.
“But must blood be spilled to justify the extension of State of Emergency?” the group asked. “Why is it that any time, the ineffective State of Emergency is about to elapse and or an extension is being sought, attacks are carried out with sophistication?”
President Goodluck Jonathan recently wrote to the National Assembly to seek an extension of the state of emergency which has been in place since May last year. The lawmakers are divided about the extension and are yet to approve it with many questioning an extension when it has not halted the activities of the insurgents, who have caused the death of over 13,000 people since 2009.
JNI’s statement comes two days after multiple bomb explosions killed dozens of people at the Kano Central Mosque on Friday.
“We are indeed shocked and pained beyond words over the news of the bomb blasts in Kano Central Mosque, which claimed the lives of over one hundred innocent Muslims…” the group said.
Read JNI’s full statement below:
PRESS RELEASE: KANO JUMU’AH MOSQUE BOMB BLASTS
JNI will not be deterred nor cowed in observing the way and manner Muslims are being killed in Nigeria, particularly the North. Therefore, we are indeed shocked and pained beyond words over the news of the bomb blasts in Kano Central Mosque, which claimed the lives of over one hundred innocent Muslims (only Allah, can ascertain the total number of death toll) that have gone for worship and within a twinkle of an eye sporadic shootings ensued targeting worshippers that tried escaping the inferno. In a similar day, precisely Friday, 20th of January, 2012, several coordinated bomb blasts rocked Kano, yet no body was prosecuted and nothing is done to protect the lives of the citizenry.
But must blood be spilled to justify the extension of State of Emergency? Why is it that any time, the ineffective State of Emergency is about to elapse and or an extension is being sought, attacks are carried out with sophistication? Are we really aware of the repercussions of spilling the blood of innocent souls? What is the essence of the Government’s War on Terror and its attendant huge budget? Where are the Intelligence and Security Agencies? Can we afford to continue relying on them for our safety and security? Why? Why? Why? We ask ad infinitum with no satisfactory answers. Without mincing words, Nigeria is being misgoverned to the Brink!
JNI condemns in the strongest term, these repeated acts of terror being unleashed on Muslims and calls on Muslims to remain calm and keep vigil over happenings around them, take all defensive measures within the purview of the laws to protect themselves since government has clearly failed.
We deeply sympathize with all the affected victims of the recent MaiduguriMonday Market Bomb Blast, the Mubi attacks and the Kano Central Mosque Bomb Blast and also console the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incidents. May Aljannatul Firdaus be the abode of all the deceased, Amin.
As usual, JNI calls on all authorities concerned to be manifestly committed to their responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of Nigerians as no development can be achieved in a situation of fear, insecurity and chaos. All hands must be on deck to stop these persistent massacres of lives and properties, as Nigeria is now a theatre of needless blood loss.
All Imams and their respective followers are urged to intensify special prayers, because according to the Prophet (PBUH) “Prayer is the weapon for the believer”. Therefore, prayers like HASBUNALLAHU WANI’MAL WAKIL AND LA HAULA WALA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAH, AND INNA LILLAHI WA’INNA ILLAIHI RAJI’UN, among others should be repeatedly recited as much as one could. Likewise we reiterate the previous directives of His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Al-Qunuut for peace and security to be restored in Nigeria. Respective Mosque Management Committees must be strengthened to handle all eventualities, likewise Muslim communities.
May Allah, The All-Mighty, The Compeller, The Supreme, and The All-Knowing, bring an end to this scourging evil, put to shame the perpetrators, uncover their evil plans and grant us lasting peace, security and a promising future full of happiness and development, Amin.

THAT ALL MANKIND MAY ONE DAY UNITE UNDER ONE GOD : Pope Francis prays alongside Grand Mufti in Istanbul’s Blue Mosque ... TheGuardianUK

Pope Francis and Grand Mufti Yaran

In a gesture designed to highlight his commitment to inter-faith dialogue, Pope Francis conducted a silent prayer alongside a senior Islamic cleric in Istanbul’s Blue Mosque on Saturday. Facing Mecca, Francis bowed his head in prayer for several minutes while standing next to Istanbul’s Grand Mufti Rahmi Yaran. The Vatican described the gesture as a “moment of silent adoration” of God.
Francis’s predecessor, Pope Benedict, caused dismay among many conservative Catholics and some Muslims when he appeared to pray in the same mosque on his visit to Turkey eight years ago. The Vatican felt compelled to publish a statement saying that Benedict had merely been in meditation, though he later acknowledged that he “certainly turned his thoughts to God”.
Francis then paid a visit to the Hagia Sophia, the most important cathedral of Orthodoxy for almost 1,000 years. The basilica was turned into an imperial mosque under the Ottomans when they conquered the city in 1453, and converted into a museum after the foundation of the Turkish republic in 1923.
His visit was followed by a papal mass in the Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, which the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics said alongside Bartholomew I, head of the 300 million Orthodox believers worldwide.
At the entrance to the church, Turks and foreigners alike strained to catch a glimpse of the pope as he emerged after the mass. One Argentinian TV assistant director, who came to visit his Turkish girlfriend in Istanbul, said he was surprised and excited about the possibility to see the pope. “This is the first stop for me, I came straight from the airport,” he said.
Garbis Atmaca, 72, an Armenian jeweller from Istanbul, said he had high hopes for the pope’s visit. “It is very good that he came,” Atmaca said. “His visit will have a good impact on the Islamic world. It will help foster understanding and peace.”
The mixed Christian community in Turkey is very small, estimated at about 80,000 in a country of 75 million, and only the few Roman Catholics and Chaldeans regard the pope as their spiritual leader. Atmaca, who belongs to the Gregorian-Armenian church in Istanbul, said that he nevertheless holds the current pontiff in high regard. “He is a very modest man, the best pope we ever had.”
Three Austrian nuns who attended the mass said that they had never seen as much cheering for a pope. “We came to see Pope Benedict eight years ago,” one of them said. “But we have never seen anything like this.”
Francis’s visit comes at a time of extreme hardship for the dwindling Christian communities in the region, especially in neighbouring Syria and Iraq where Islamic State (Isis) militants have captured large swathes of land and persecuted Shia Muslims, Christians, Yazidis and others who do not agree with their radical interpretation of Sunni Islam. Many of those fleeing the violence currently live as refugees in Turkey.
The 77-year-old Argentinian pontiff urged that fundamentalism be fought not through military interventions, but by eradicating poverty, hunger and marginalisation around the world.
“Both [the pope and Bartholomew] are deeply concerned about the brutal treatment and expulsion of Christians from their homes in the region, which has historically been the cradle of Christianity,” John Chryssavgis, theological adviser at the Patriarch of Constantinople, said.
Some fear that increased authoritarianism, nationalism and President Erdogan’s constant focus on Sunni Muslim identity might lead to more pressure on minorities in Turkey, too; others believe the situation has started to improve for Christian minorities during the 12 years of Islamic Justice and Development party government.
“Things are good now, better than before certainly,” Atmaca said. “I think the Islamist rhetoric [of the government] is mostly show.”
Others feel there has been stagnation. “Things will likely not get worse under the AKP,” said Orhan Kemal Cengiz, a human rights lawyer and expert on minority rights. “But they will not get better either. The Christians in Turkey should stand up for their rights and make more demands.”
Speaking at the presidential palace on Saturday, Francis underlined the importance of religious freedom for everyone. “It is essential that all citizens – Muslim, Jewish and Christian – both in the provision and practice of the law, enjoy the same rights and respect the same duties,” he said in a joint press conference with Erdogan.
Later on Saturday, Bartholomew I, with whom the pope shares close personal ties, is to receive Francis at the ecumenical patriarchate.

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL : Buhari Meets APC Delegates In Calabar, Says PDP Must Be Stopped From Destroying Nigeria ... InformationNigeria

Muhammadu Buhari
presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on Wednesday warned that if the ruling Peoples Democratic Party is not stopped in 2015, the party would destroy the country.
Buhari gave this warning while addressing party delegates in Calabar, Cross River State, ahead of the December 10 presidential primaries of the APC.
According to the former head of state, the country has lost so much in the last 15 years that the PDP had been in power.
‎He said, “We have lost so much. What has become of the Nigeria Airways, our shipping lines, railways among others. Infrastructure is going down and also the rising level of insecurity.
“The Peoples Democratic Party has failed badly in their 15 years of rule so far. Everything is going down inpsite of all the money. What are they doing with the money?
“We must stop PDP from destroying this country. If we don’t get rid of the PDP, PDP will get rid of Nigerians. We are fed up. Whatever your sentiments, let us work together and rebuild this country”.
He urged the people to get their permanent voter cards to enable them vote next year.
“Make sure you get the PVC, because it is only with it that you can vote out the PDP”, he said.
While soliciting the support of the delegates, Mr. Buhari promised to do his best if he is elected as the next President in 2015.
The aspirant also lamented the menace of Boko Haram in the North Eastern part of the country, adding that the activities of the sect has nothing to do with religion.
In his comment, the state chairman of APC, Pastor Usani Usani, described Buhari as humble, disciplined and intelligent.
Usani said Buhari’s coming to the state proved that he has not taken the state for granted given that he is not the only one seeking to be president.

ANY WONDER WHY JONATHAN IS SO INEFFECTIVE IN THIS WAR AGAINST TERROR? : APC Is Behind Terrorism in Nigeria, Edwin Clark Declares ... TheHerald

Edwin-Clark
Elder statesman and former Information Minister, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark has alleged that the main opposition party in the country, All Progressives Congress (APC) are supporting the insurgency in Nigeria to ensure they get into power.
He also claimed that there are sinister moves to rig out President Goodluck Jonathan in the forthcoming 2015 general elections.
According to him, “Well, I believe that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has been supporting the insurgency. They are anti-government and have not done anything to support the fight against the insurgents but rather, they seem to be supporting them. A situation whereby, the President wants to do anything, to carry out his normal functions, like him declaring his intention to contest the 2015 election, on the previous day you will have this bombing.”
“It is the main aim of the insurgents to prevent Mr. President from declaring his intention, or doing anything, to make him a lame duck and to paralyse his government, this is their intention. So, if on the eve of a particular programme of Mr. President, there are bomb blasts and the president goes ahead with the event only for the opposition to capitalize on it and criticize him, then, it is very unpatriotic. So, it was very unfair for the opposition to say that Mr. President has no sympathy for the dead that he was dancing on their graves.”
“That was very uncivilized statement by whoever made it. So, it shows that some of them believe in whatever the insurgents do to frustrate the government, to frustrate the actions and activities of Mr. President and it is not good enough.”
He also accused the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega of being an ethnic bigot who is promoting the interests of the North by tryimg to create additional 30,000 polling units.
“When President appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, he gave us an impression that Prof. Jega was an independent man, Prof. Jega is a neutral man, but we have seen that Prof. Jega is a tribalist who is ready to promote his ethnic nationalism, who does not believe in doing the right thing.”
“We have been always supporting him but his recent attitude particularly his introduction of the 30,000 polling units is not in the interest of Nigerians, it shows clearly who Prof Jega is. The 30,000 units should have given the North an advantage, whereas in the whole of the South, it gives them only about 8000 units.”

HERE WE GO AGAIN : Jonathan orders investigation into attack on Kano mosque ... NAN

Pres-Goodluck-Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered full scale investigation into bomb attacks on the Central Mosque in Kano that left 35 killed and 150 injured on Friday.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.
Jonathan, according to the statement, reiterated the determination of the Federal Government to put an end to the reprehensible acts of all groups and persons involved in terrorism.
The statement stressed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestation was a despicable and unjustifiable threat to the society.
It extended Jonathan’s heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Kano State over the attacks.
“President Goodluck Jonathan commiserates with all the families who lost their loved ones.
“The President calls on relief agencies and medical personnel to deploy every possible effort to assist the injured.
“He also enjoins the general public to heed the call for the donation of blood by the hospitals where the injured are being treated.
“The President further directed the security agencies to launch a full scale investigation and to leave no stone unturned until all agents of terror undermining the right of every citizen to life and dignity, are tracked down and brought to justice.
“Terrorism in all its forms and manifestation is a despicable and unjustifiable threat to our society.
“Government will continue to take steps to put an end to the reprehensible acts of all groups and persons involved in acts of terrorism.’’
The statement called on all Nigerians not to despair in this moment of great trial in the nation’s history but to remain united to confront the common enemy.
“The president is confident that no terrorist act against fellow citizens will destroy the Nigerian spirit to remain positive, resolute and united in the quest for lasting peace and security in the country.’’
It appealed to all Nigerians to remain vigilant and cooperate actively with security agencies to win the ongoing war against terrorism. (NAN)

A HARVEST OF DRUG TRAFFICKERS : Seven drug traffickers nabbed on one flight excrete 8.7kg cocaine ... PunchNews

Seven drug traffickers
Forty-nine-year-old Fred Obi was about to board an Ethiopian Air flight from Abuja to Tel Aviv, Israel with a strange cargo allegedly concealed in his stomach when the law caught up with him. He had ingested 1.594kg of cocaine.
But he was not the only one boarding that same flight with the intention of transporting narcotics they had ingested on November 22, 2014 when they were arrested by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Also arrested were Ekechi Ferdinand, 36; Okonkwo Paul, 20; Azubuogu Obumneme, 30; Okechi Anthony, 34; Anozie Henry, 34 and Okafor Francis, 51.
NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed that the raid which was headed by the agency’s commander at the Abuja Airport, Mr. Hamisu Lawan, would turn out to be a revealing one.
The suspects, who were said to have been arrested and isolated, were soon made to excrete the drug they had ingested.
“The last of the suspects eventually finished excreting the drugs in his stomach this morning (Thursday, November 26),” Ofoyeju said.
Ferdinand excreted 1.616kg of cocaine, Paul – 1.103kg, Obumneme – 1.450kg, Anthony – 935 grammes while Henry exctreted 874 grammes of cocaine. The oldest of the suspects, Francis, on his part excreted 1.167kg.
All the suspects, except Obi, were said to have Hong Kong as the destination on their tickets.
NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said that the arrest of the suspects was an added victory to the war against drug trafficking in the country.
He said, “Coming at a time when commanders of our agency are holding a summit to move the agency forward, this is a welcome development.
“Having seven suspected drug traffickers on a single flight is a reflection of the desperation of drug cartels.
“But this will prove to them that the NDLEA has the capacity to stop drug trafficking no matter what method they employ.
“Fortunately for the suspects as well, our arrest has saved their lives because for the suspects heading to Hong Kong, it is clearly stated in their visas that drug trafficking in Hong Kong attracts the death penalty. Nigeria has equally been saved from an embarrassment their arrest would have caused if they were caught over there.”
Meanwhile, the NDLEA has been urged to concentrate on intelligence gathering to identify the sources of wealth of drug barons and stop them from gaining control of real estates, banks and other legitimate businesses in the country.
In a paper titled Establishing an Intelligence Database: Process and Importance for Sustainable Drug Controldelivered at the 2014 Command Officers’ Summit in Kaduna, the state Governor, Mukhtar Yero, called on the agency to seek elaborate collaboration with stakeholders in the war against narcotics.
According to a statement by Ofoyeju, Kaduna State has presented a bill to the state House of Assembly to prohibit the abuse of lawful substances like Zakami, an intoxicating local plant said to be used by youths in the state.
Giade said, “Drug barons are constantly devising new ways of smuggling drugs to markets around the world. Most significantly, modes of drug concealment have assumed a more sophisticated pattern. We must continue to embrace change and maintain our superiority ahead of drug syndicates.
“Let us identify better, faster and innovative ways of getting a task done. Let us learn how to prevent and manage crisis. Let us identify barriers to effective training, anti-drug abuse counselling, information gathering, diligent prosecution and proffer solutions on the way forward.”

AS THE TERROR BODY COUNT BEGINS : Kano mosque blasts: 92 dead at one hospital morgue ... PMNews

Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau and his lieutenants
At least 92 people have been confirmed dead at one hospital morgue following three explosions in Kano. Earlier, 64 people were confirmed dead and 126 injured on Friday when two suicide bombers blew themselves up and gunmen opened fire during weekly prayers at a mosque of one of Nigeria’s top Islamic leaders.
The attack at the Grand Mosque in Kano, the biggest city in the mainly Muslim north of the country, came just as Friday prayers had got under way.
The mosque is attached to the palace of the Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II, Nigeria’s second most senior Muslim cleric, who just last week urged civilians to take up arms against Boko Haram.
The blasts came after a bomb attack was foiled against a mosque in the northeastern city of Maiduguri earlier on Friday, five days after two female suicide bombers killed over 45 people in the city.
National police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu told AFP that the bombers blew themselves up in quick succession then “gunmen opened fire on those who were trying to escape”.
Ojukwu said he did not know whether the suicide bombers were male or female, after a spate of attacks by women in recent months, and did not give an exact figure on the number of gunmen.
But he said an angry mob killed four of the shooters in the chaotic aftermath.
– Influential figure –
Worshipper Aminu Abdullahi and local resident Hajara Tukur both said that there were two explosions in quick succession and a third in a nearby road.
A senior rescue official said 64 bodies had been brought to just one Kano area hospital, while 126 people had been admitted with injuries at three facilities.
“Those figures are going to climb,” he said on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
The Emir of Kano last week told worshippers at the same mosque that northerners should take up arms against Boko Haram, which has been fighting for a hardline Islamic state since 2009.
He also cast doubt on Nigerian troops’ ability to protect civilians and end the insurgency, in rare public comments by a cleric on political and military affairs.
The emir, who is currently thought to be out of the country, is a hugely influential figure in Nigeria, which is home to more than 80 million Muslims, most of whom live in the north.
Officially the emir is the country’s number two cleric, behind the Sultan of Sokoto, and any attack could inflame tensions in Nigeria’s second city, which is an ancient seat of Islamic study.
Sanusi was named emir earlier this year and is a prominent figure in his own right, having previously served as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
During his time in charge of the CBN, he spoke out against massive government fraud and was suspended from his post in February just as his term of office was drawing to a close.
– Previous attacks –
Boko Haram has repeatedly attacked Kano before. On November 14, a suicide bomb attack at a petrol station killed six people, including three police.
The Islamists have a record of attacking prominent clerics and in July 2012, a suicide bomber killed five people leaving Friday prayers at the home of the Shehu of Borno in Maiduguri.
The Shehu is Nigeria’s number three Islamic leader.
Boko Haram threatened Sanusi’s predecessor and the Sultan of Sokoto for allegedly betraying the faith by submitting to the authority of the secular government in Abuja.
In early 2013, the convoy of Sanusi’s predecessor was also attacked.
Andrew Noakes, co-ordinator of the Nigeria Security Network of security analysts, said the attack fitted a pattern of violence targeting religious and traditional leaders seen as “allies” of the state.
He said it was possible that the group carried out the attack as a direct response to Sanusi’s comments last week, although it may have been planned beforehand.
“Whatever the case, the group has sent a message to northern leaders that crossing them will have consequences,” Noakes said in an email exchange.
Boko Haram attacks in recent months have ranged from the far northeast of Nigeria, across the wider north and northwest, using hit-and-run tactics, suicide bombings and car bombs.
The authorities in Cameroon, Chad and Niger have all expressed concern about Boko Haram’s ability to conduct cross-border strikes, particularly as the dry season approaches.
The group’s use of female suicide bombers, which dates back to June and saw four women blow themselves in Kano in a week in July, has been seen as a tactic to sow wider fear and panic.

NIGERIANS ARE ANGRY IF ONLY YOU CAN FEEL THEIR PULSE : Students stone President Jonathan in Ife ... PMNews

There was unrest on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State, southwest Nigeria, on Friday, 28 November, 2014 as students of the institution hauled stones and sticks at President Goodluck Jonathan during his visit to the campus.

But the placard-wielding students of the institution who had converged at the Oduduwa Hall, venue of the conference to protest what they termed “rot in the educational sector” booed and stoned President Jonathan while entering the presidential chopper few minutes after the summit.
The irate protesters were shouting “ole” “ole” (“thief”, “thief”) at the president and other notable politicians who attended the event.
They displayed placards with inscriptions like: “We Condemn Jos Killing of Students, Students Are Not Chicken”, Don’t Sell Education As You Sold Electricity.”, We Demand Total Reversal of 2014 Hiked School Fees, We are Not Responsible For Jonathan’s Ineptitude.” among other inscriptions.
The students who were in their hundreds barricaded the road leading to the school’s sports centre where the chopper wearing the seal of the Federal Government and marked Nigerian Air Force, NAF-280, requesting that President Jonathan should address them before departing the campus.
In the ensuing unrest, the convoy of President Jonathan was delayed for few minutes as the students refused the President and his entourage passage to board the chopper despite pleadings by some security operatives.
Also, the Governor of Ekiti state, Mr. Ayodele Fayose who attempted to pacify the angry students was booed as students chorused ‘thief on him.
The vehicle conveying the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade was not spared as students sat at the front of his vehicle for minutes before he was eventually allowed passage.
While the President was boarding the chopper, some students continue to aim pebbles at the chopper before they were dispersed by security operatives. although none of the thrown missiles touched the president.
Some students who had examinations also expressed their displeasure at the condition they were subjected to owing to President Jonathan’s visit to the campus.
Most of the students had to walk long distance to their examinations’ venues as there was no vehicular movement on campus and its environs.
Meanwhile, a segment of the Yoruba people at the conference endorsed President Jonathan for a second term of office even as they urged him to help recover their political and social values.

AS THE NOOSE TIGHTENS AROUND THE OFFICE : 63 out of 109 senators back plan to impeach Jonathan ... PunchNews

President Goodluck Jonathan
SIXTY-three senators as of Thursday have signed up to the plan to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan in the upper legislative chamber, The PUNCH learnt in Abuja.
One of the arrowheads of the move to remove Jonathan in the Senate showed our correspondent the list containing the signatures of the senators.
The source said eight Peoples Democratic Party senators were among the signatories to the planned impeachment notice.
There are 109 members in the Senate.
An All Progressives Congress senator from the North-West zone, who asked not to be named, told our correspondent that the lawmakers’ major grouse was the President’s handling of the economy and political affairs of the country.
The senator cited poor implementation of the national budget since 2011, alleged high level of corruption and “gross disregard” of the legislature at both the federal and state levels as topping the list of lawmakers’ anger against Jonathan.
Asked whether he realised that the process of impeachment could be tedious and cumbersome, the senator said, “ We know and we are prepared to show the President that we have responsibility to the people and the nation in general.
“We are prepared to lay the impeachment notice anytime from next week. Meetings are already being held.”
Senator Ibrahim Musa (APC Niger North) confirmed that there were moves by some members of the Senate to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President but failed to give details.
“I think there is something like that but I don’t have the details, it is still coming as a rumour,” Musa said.
But The PUNCH learnt that the impeachment move against the President had really gained momentum with the APC senators mobilising themselves to carry out the exercise anytime from next week.
Investigations by our correspondent revealed that some PDP senators, who were initially at the forefront of the struggle, had retreated following the intervention of the senate leadership and the promise of automatic tickets by the party.
It was learnt that the PDP senators had been pleading with their APC colleagues to hold on till next week pending the outcome of the moves by the senate leadership to ensure the realisation of the automatic tickets agreement they had with the PDP and Jonathan.
An APC senator told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that the impeachment letter contains the signature of both the APC and PDP senators.
He explained that the letter could not be laid on the floor of the senate because some PDP senators appealed to them to delay the action.
He said, “The truth of the matter is that the impeachment notice would have been laid if not for our colleagues in the PDP who pleaded with us to delay the process pending when the senate leadership would come up with the result of its efforts at securing automatic tickets for them.
“In any case the process had started but if we submit the letter now, the signatures of the PDP senators will be there and the party might want to use that as an excuse to deny them their automatic tickets.”
The PDP senators contacted by our correspondent on the issue declined to make comment.
However, one of them who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the process of impeachment had not been suspended.

TENURE ELONGATION AND INSURGENCY .. ANY RELATIONSHIP? : ‘Insurgency is Jonathan’s strategy for tenure elongation’ ... PunchNews

Senator Kabiru Gaya
In this interview with SUNDAY ABORISADE, the Chairman, Senate Committee on States and Local Governments, Senator Kabiru Gaya, (APC, Kano-South) alleges that the lingering insurgency in the North-East is aimed at elongating President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure beyond 2015
Why did you oppose the request by President Goodluck Jonathan for an extension of emergency rule in the three northeastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe?
Let us first dispassionately assess the situation of things in that region. This is the third time the government is asking for an extension of emergency rule. If you send your son to school or give a person an assignment, if he fails the first time, you may ignore it and send him back for a second time. If he fails again, you may send him back for a third time. If he fails a third time, he shouldn’t expect you to send him back a fourth time. I mean, it is just like a doctor giving a wrong drug to a patient and the patient did not recover from the ailment yet that doctor goes back to the patient in an attempt to give the same ineffective drug.
Remember, we didn’t agree on the same day about the emergency rule extension request granted in May this year. We debated and invited service chiefs. They came and told us that they needed the extension to fight the insurgency and assured us that in three months, this issue would be entirely over; that there would be peace and stability in the region. They said that if we don’t give them that tool (extension) to work, their hands would be tied. We knew that even at that time there was progress, the civilian JTF, in collaboration with the military, were working hard; they had sent the insurgents out of Maiduguri town and maybe out of Yobe town and they fled to Sambisa forest. So, the military knew where these people were; they were supposed to have gone after them and attack them before they dispersed to other villages. But they didn’t do that. We also asked them what the other problem was and they told us it’s about money and you remember recently, we granted $1bn apart from almost N1tn which was put in the national budget for security.
Yet, because we wanted them to stop killing our people, Nigerians, both Muslims and Christians, agreed on the budgetary allocation, despite the fact that it was against our wish. We agreed because the prime objective of any leader in this country, whether president or governor or local government chairman, is to maintain peace in his/her constituency and if that prime objective is not there, it means that there won’t be progress, nothing will work out. Now, in Maiduguri, they are not sleeping. So, what we are saying is that when we approved the last one, we gave them conditions.
What were these conditions?
The first condition was that they would report to us monthly. On that, we can share the blame that they didn’t report to us and we didn’t call on them but they were supposed to report to us monthly. But after about three months, when they reported, we insisted that our committees on Defence and Security should invite the service chiefs to hear from them. The committees invited them. What was perceived was a suspicion of internal or external sabotage in the fight against insurgency. So, how can we simply close our eyes and extend the emergency rule again?
The second condition we gave them was that they should involve the civilian JTF. We didn’t tell them to involve all of them. We told them to screen them, find those who are responsible, who are good enough with verifiable backgrounds, those who cannot betray the military and move them into the system because they are from that area and know the terrain. We advocated that the civilian JTF be given official backing by employing them. That was not done. We urged an improvement in the welfare of those (soldiers) at war because whether we like it or not, whether we pretend to ourselves or not, we are at war. Even now, there is a petition on my desk on how their (soldiers’) welfare is not being taken care of. So, the second condition was not fulfilled. And you find out that there are conflicting stories and pieces of information. With the availability of the internet, people send and receive information with alarming speed. People are being killed on a daily basis. It was learnt that when insurgents are on the prowl, you find out that the military are directed to go off roadblocks. That was what happened in Mubi. The story we heard might be true, it might not be true. It is curious that three days after ammunition were moved to barracks, insurgents would come in and take people away. You see, a leader must be concerned about the welfare and security of his people.
Thus, the senate decided that no, we cannot grant the state of emergency. But if we do not grant it, we will be boxed into a corner because the military will hands-off the affected areas. We are in a fix; if we don’t grant, they’ll say okay, let everybody go and take care of themselves. When we sent the military to go and fight the insurgency in the Niger Delta during late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration, there was no state of emergency but they crushed the rebellion, they crushed the insurgents and there is peace now. We are putting N150bn in the budget every year to maintain peace in Niger Delta, why are they not taking the same steps here?
You once argued that President Jonathan was plotting to perpetuate himself in power through the backdoor. Why did you say so?
The Peoples Democratic Party and the Federal Government are currently facing serious problems and they are employing means and ways to perpetuate the current leadership in power beyond 2015.
Let us start with the issue of constitutional amendments. Remember the President brought to the National Assembly a bill seeking powers to initiate a new constitution. If that had scaled through, that means the country would start a new democratic arrangement afresh. For instance, myself, Senator Buka Abba Ibrahim of Yobe and others were beneficiaries of the 1999 Constitution. We operated with the 1979 Constitution as governors in 1991. But in 1999, a new constitution came up, Buka Abba Ibrahim, Jolly Nyame (Taraba), Abubakar Audu (Kogi) who were former governors contested again in 1999 under a new constitution and they won. However, after the first term, they wanted to contest again in 2003 but there was a protest which made some people to go to court in order to challenge their alleged plan to contest after two terms in office, contrary to the provisions of the constitution. The Supreme Court, in its interpretation, said, since the country is operating a new constitution, whatever was done in the past, remained a plus for them.
Now, if the President should bring a new constitution, what that means is that, all those years that every political office holder has served since 1999 till that time were null and void and would become a plus to anybody who wanted to contest for any elective post. So, that means if the proposed constitution had been allowed to pass through, the President can go for another eight years. Maybe after seven years in office, they would again introduce another constitution that would qualify him for another eight years, so that when Nigerians are tired, they will retire to fate and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan would then transform into a life President. That is why we killed that idea in the Senate. We did not allow it to fly. Later, they brought some people together again and organised a National Conference with a view to amending the 1999 Constitution, which was a plot to also introduce a new constitution but that also failed because we knew that it was a game plan by the Jonathan administration to elongate the system beyond 2015 through the backdoor.
The third attempt which is already being challenged in court, is the issue of insurgency. We have been fighting this battle, trying to calm it down. Some senators even flew the kite when they said on the floor of the Senate that Nigeria is in a state of war and, therefore, election is not on the table. This statement emanated from some PDP senators. This message sent serious signals and it generated a lot of reactions until some people said they did not say it but of course a lot of people, including me, think that this issue of insurgency is a ploy to elongate the life of the current administration because there won’t be elections in a war situation and so, everybody will continue in office without the mandate of Nigerians which is totally unconstitutional.
You know, in a war situation, anything can happen. It’s just as when we introduced the Doctrine of Necessity to create the office of acting President which was not even in the constitution when the late President Yar’Adua was sick. It was our prerogative and power to make sure that the executive ensures peace in the country. It is a serious situation that we are battling now because if you say you cannot hold elections in three states because of insurgency, which is now extending to Gombe and Bauchi states, since they are already threatening to take over Gombe by Christmas – before heading for Taraba – it is really serious. Now, the situation is so bad that if you call the name Boko Haram, soldiers will drop their weapons and start running, let alone civilians.
Who among the presidential aspirants of the APC do you think can tackle the nation’s various problems effectively?
I am not trying to introduce politics into the situation but we have to tell ourselves the truth. Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso was a Minister of Defence and he is now a serving governor. Before now, he was a legislator and rose to become the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives. He was also Special Adviser to the President on Dafur. He was a member of the Niger Delta Development Commission, hence, he has the credentials. He is a young man too. He can work for 18 hours a day. I believe that all our elders and leaders in the APC should support him. If you look at the situation in other countries, their citizens are going for young people to become their president. In America, Bill Clinton was a young man who led the country. The same thing applies to the incumbent President, Barack Obama.
Why are you contesting as governor again after you left the Kano Government House about 23 years ago? Why don’t you give room for younger elements to take the stage?
I left the Kano Government House about 23 years ago and yet God has made me to be relevant in politics. This means that there is something that people see in me. Up till today, some of the projects that I executed still speak for me and the people are happy about them. Also, as a senator, I have gathered more experience and exposure. I have a better political network across the country. I will bring my experience to bear on governance in the country if elected.

$40 PER BARREL? NOW I KNOW WE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE : We have measures to tackle declining oil prices –Okonjo-Iweala ... TribuneNews

Nigeria is well prepared to address the issue of the declining oil prices, the Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala assured at the fourth Capital Market Committee (CMC) held in Abuja on Thursday.
She stated that the government has taken fiscal policy measures that would weather the storm if the oil prices fall to $70 per barrel, $65 per barrel and even to $60 per barrel.
In her words: “What we are talking about is that with the oil prices decreasing, we are assuring the capital market that we are going to take fiscal policy measures that will stabilise the economy. We have already announced some of these, that is taking down the benchmark price but we are doing more than that.
We are taking a scenario based approach. We have already developed a scenario at $70 a barrel, $65 a barrel and even $60. We’re not stopping at $73 per barrel.”
Okonjo-Iweala, who also doubles as Co-ordinating Minister of Economy (CME) disclosed that the measures include more revenues and cutting down expenditures.
She explained that the government is looking at collaborating with the Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS) to help strengthen the tax administration of the country such that companies get registered and remit the right taxes.
“We have a bundle of measures raising more revenue, as I spelt it out in my speech, and cutting down expenditure, both recurrent and a bit of waste both in the short-term and the medium-term.
In the medium-term, we have to look at restructuring our public expenditure. To take out inefficiencies, duplication and so on will enable us weather the storm in conjunction with the monetary policy measures that has just been announced. So, we are ready lower oil prices. What does that mean? It means that the capital market seems a stable place to develop, a stable economy. it sends a good message to them,” she highlighted.
“With the devaluation and also the hike in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), much as I know, the increase in the MPR and all those put together would also mean a little more difficulty for access to credit, but under the present circumstances, we feel that the bundle of measures and the MPR are the best way to go, coupled with what we are doing on the fiscal side. I think we have what the capital market needs,” she continued.
She noted that only 25 per cent of the Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) are registered; adding that only about N65 billion has been collected by FIRS and another N168 billion is expected to be collected annually.
The minister noted that the her ministry, with the help of the president Goodluck Jonathan has been able to achieve it through the ‘You win’ programme by getting SMEs to get registered with the corporate affairs commission.
“Only 25 per cent of our SMEs are registered. To increase the number, we are going to do it gently. We are aware that the SMEs are struggling with other disadvantages,” she assured.
The minister further stated that surcharges will be placed on certain luxuries in the country; adding that the government is looking to raise about N480 billion($3 billion) within the next three years.
She said: “Surcharges will be placed on certain luxuries in the country. We hope to raise N480 billion ($3 billion) within the next 3 years. We are taking that as a base.”
