THAT DEMON OOZING JIM IYKE DELIVERANCE STORY : The Real Story of Jim Iyke's Deliverance at Prophet TB Joshua's Church... Blow by Blow Account Plus CLEAR VIDEO WITH AUDIO FOOTAGE.

Making a surprise appearance in The SCOAN, Nollywood actor Jim Iyke entered quietly and unannounced, joining worshippers from around the world as they listened to the inspiring message from renowned Prophet TB Joshua during the service on Sunday, 29 September, 2013.
As The SCOAN’s Wise Men moved through the congregation in prayer, the lightning of God located Iyke and he was no longer able to control himself. Lunging towards one of the Wise Man as if to attack him:
An evil spirit that had been tormenting the life of Jim Iyke manifested! The congregation in the auditorium and the overflow congregations shouted in surprise as they began to witness the deliverance of a man they were all too familiar with.
The evil spirit that had tormented the life of Jim Iyke for so many years confessed that it was the cause of his setback and disappointment. It confessed that it was the reason he could never marry, stating that it would not allow him to love anyone. It continued confessing that Iyke was the biggest and that it was only God's grace that had kept him. As the evil spirit inside him struggled to attack the Wise Man, the supremacy of the Holy Spirit continued to overpower it.
The deliverance continued but the battle was not against flesh and blood; it was against the spiritual entities that had been causing crisis in his life, family, health, career and future.
To the jubilation of the congregation, the name of Jesus Christ prevailed over the evil spirit and Iyke received his freedom. Overwhelmed with what had just happened, Iyke immediately knelt in God's presence, appreciating His Creator for his miraculous deliverance. Hallelujah!
Jim Iyke, born James Ikechukwu Esomugha, is currently one of the highest paid actors in the Nigerian movie industry and cultivated the name “Nollywood bad boy” for himself. As one of the most successful actors, he has starred in over 150 films to date. He has launched his own film production unit, “Untamed Productions” and his own music label, “Untamed Records” with his very own album, “Who Am I?”
He is also founder of “Jim Iyke Foundation”, contributing funds to children of the less privileged and children with physical challenges.
Among his movie awards are: The Teenage Choice Award; Best Actor In Nigerian Entertainment Award; African Achievement Award; Best Actor of the Year (Mode Men Award 2010); Sexiest Man In Nigeria 2008, Best African Actor (NET Awards).
The humility demonstrated by Jim Iyke in submitting himself to the power of God should prompt others in his industry to make the same life-saving choice.

BETTER DAYS AHEAD ... KUDOS TO THE COURAGE TO TRANSFORM : Jonathan hands over PHCN’s successor firms to buyers ... TheNation

Jonathan hands over PHCN’s successor firms to buyers
…. Says, ‘Better days ahead for Nigerians’
President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday read riot act to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) cautioning the power sector staff to re-orientate themselves in order to be able to meet up with their new roles under the on-going reforms in the power sector.
Giving the warning after formally handing over share certificates and licenses to new core owners of Power Holding Companies of Nigeria (PHCN) successor companies at the Banquet Hall, Abuja, to 10 Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and four Generating Companies (GENCOs), he said that it is no longer going to be business as usual.
He said the government is committed to providing the investors with all enabling environment in order to make them succeed in giving Nigerians uninterrupted power supply.
According to him, the Federal Government has provided the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET) capitalization fund of over $750 million to carry out its functions without financial constraints.
He said: “However, I must remind you that the work is not over. Your staff must re-orient themselves to play the needed new roles that have been assigned to them as a result of the reform.
“They must be prepared to collaborate efficiently with our private sector partners; business it can no longer be as usual; all the relevant MDAs must be ready to work in a more determined, proactive and result-driven manner,” he said.
On the government support for the investors, he said: “The administration is committed to providing all elements that are necessary for our private sector partners to succeed in providing Nigerians with uninterrupted power supply.”
“To start with, the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET), the off-taker, has been provided with a capitalization of $750 million positioning it to carry out its mandate without financial constraints.
“Arrangements are also on-going to ensure that the Nigerian Electricity Liability Company (NELMCO) is adequately funded, to assume all of the liabilities associated with the privatisation of the PHCN successor companies, as well as other related liabilities.”
He continued: “The new GENCOs owners are inheriting signed gas supply and transportation agreements, a new phenomenon in the gas-to-power industry, thereby moving the industry away from the prior status of best endeavor supply and transportation basis.
“Accordingly, we will maintain the agreed gas pricing policy in order to encourage new investments in gas supply and infrastructure development. The implementation of the gas policy will culminate in a willing buyer-will seller structure to establish a fully market-driven environment,” he added.
Stressing that adequate measures have been taken to resolve all labour related issues in the sector, he said that contributions of relevant MDAs in the realisation of the privatisation of the power sector was critical.
While urging Nigerians to exercise patience with the government, President Jonathan declared that better days are ahead in the power sector.
Also speaking at the occasion, Vice President, Namadi Sambo maintained that it is only the private sector investment in the power sector that can guarantee satisfying Nigeria’s yearning for stable power supply.
He said the new owners of the generating companies are expected to build up capacity from the present levels of performance to additional 5,000 megawatts within a period of five years.
“It is noteworthy to state that the privatization of the power utility is unique and different from previous privatization programmes in the country, that of the power sector is driven by the need for efficiency and investment rather than optimisation of proceeds to the government. Moreover, only bidders’ technical ability and financial capability influenced outcomes,” he stated.

AND WHAT DO WE MAKE OF THIS? : 10-Year-Old Girl Who Gives Birth After 31-Week Pregnancy [PHOTO] ... Na wa o!

A 10-year-old Mexican girl has given premature birth to a baby boy weighing 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds), Mexican media outlets reported.
The mother was initially admitted to Hospital de la Mujer in Puebla, located about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City, on Oct. 22, suffering from seizures and other medical problems. Surgeons at the hospital delivered the infant by Caesarean section after a 31-week pregnancy.

According to UpFront News, hospital officials have confirmed the birth.

Hospital director Rogelio Gonzalez told The Latin American Herald Tribune that the child is in the neonatal intensive care unit, recovering from pneumonia. The mother, who has since been released, has been breastfeeding the child. For more click on read more

"[She] comes every day with her mother to breastfeed her son every four hours and she is recovering very well from her surgery," Gonzalez said.

The young girl, who is almost 11 years old, is reportedly from the San Francisco Totimehuacan community. According to Gonzalez, the state's minimum age of consent is 12 and abortion is illegal unless the mother was the victim of a sexual assault. As a result, the Puebla state Attorney General's Office has been notified of the birth and is investigating. The agency did not immediately reply to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

Other girls have given birth at that age or younger. In August 2010, an 11-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by her stepfather gave birth after she was denied an abortion because she was in her fourth month of pregnancy, ksee24.com reported. The youngest mother on record for giving birth is Lina Medina. According to Mid Day, she was five years old when she gave birth to a baby boy in 1939. The father was not positively identified.

In regard to this most recent case, Gonzalez told aciprensa.com he has the "best expectations" for the child's recovery"

WHERE ARE WE HEADED PLEASE? : UNBELIEVABLE: Woman Gives Birth to Twins with Two Different Fathers ... Yeye de smell.

Last year, Texas woman, Mia Washington didn't plan on giving birth to twins but when she did she ended up getting even more than she bargained for - her fraternal sons have two different fathers.

As you know, every month a woman releases one egg from her ovaries that can be fertilized by sperm. As for Washington, she released a pair of eggs. According to Dr. Hilda Hutcherson of Columbia University who reported to TODAY News:

"sperm can remain alive and well and viable for up to five days in the reproductive tract. Thus, a woman can have sex with different men within those five days and the sperm just kind of hang out there waiting for the egg to be released."

Washington, who is 20 years old, had sex with another man a few days after she slept with her 44-year-old boyfriend, James Harrison - hence her double conception. James investigated the issue when he noticed the twins, Justin and Jordan, who were born seven minutes, apart looked very different, even for fraternal twins. He requested a paternity test and discovered Justin was not his child.

When Harrison found out the news he was devastated: "I was hurt, torn apart - didn't know what the next move was gonna be."

Although he was hurt, Harrison continued to raise Justin as his own. And despite the odds of a situation like this, this is not the first time twins have been born to different fathers. Studies have revealed 1 to 2 percent of fraternal twin births have different fathers, but this often goes unnoticed. The terminology used to identify this type of birth is called: "heteropaternal superfecundation".

It was reported on first by John Archer who was the first doctor to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1810. Archer dubbed the term when a white woman had sex with two men, black and white  and later gave birth to twin boys. One son was white whereas the other was of mixed race.

As for Mia Washington and James Harrison, they plan on marrying each other in the future. And in the mean time, they will prepare for their new family addition- a baby girl. She will add some sweet and spice to their clan of three boys. (Washington has a 4-year old from a previous relationship).

AS WE WAIT PASTOR BIODUN FATOYINBO'S ROBUST RESPONSE TO THE COZA SEX SCANDALS : Aftermath of sex scandal: Mass exodus hits COZA ... YEYE DE SMELL. DailyPost

Smite the shepherd and the sheep will flee”. This biblical injunction vividly captures the ongoing scenario at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, COZA.
The name COZA became a ‘street anthem’ a few months back following a shocking confession by one Ese Walter, an ex-member of the church of her week-long sexual escapade with the senior pastor of the church, Abiodun Fatoyinbo.
Ese’s claims had opened a floodgate of other cases. Another church member who simply identified herself as Franca also alleged that the Apostle, most commonly described as a man with ‘uncommon prophetic insight’ al lured her to Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos, for a ‘romantic prayer’.
However, since then, the pastor has neither come out to refute or accept the allegation, but claimed that he was still waiting for God’s order.
While many still doubt the authenticity of the allegations, some light-hearted members of the church are gradually leaving the church. This, DailyPost learnt during a recent visit to the Lagos branch of the church, situated in Maryland, Ikeja.
Our findings revealed that many aggrieved members and deacons have left the church since the authority of the church decided to sweep the matter under the carpet.
When our correspondent inquired from a member why the church looked so empty on a Sunday, he was told the population of the church was reducing drastically on weekly bases.
“I think this started not quiet long. Last week was even the worst; you could see empty seats everywhere,” the fair complexioned female member said.

Asked if the man of God had come out to deny or admit the allegation, the member said they’ve warned them never to talk about it anywhere, until he (Pastor Abiodun) hears from God.
“I think this is one of the reasons many members are leaving. The church authority had warned us never to talk about the issue until the man of God speaks, and I think many are beginning to find it hard to believe.”
His members had since called on the pastor to come clean on the adultery allegations, but he prefers to remain silent until God says otherwise.
Our sources revealed that the church stands divided because of the incident. While many insisted that the pastor should speak out, others are of the opinion that since God asked him to keep quite, he should wait until he says otherwise.
A member was quoted as saying, “God can’t ask you to keep quiet in this matter because his name is at stake too. The church of God is being accused here and the same God is telling him to keep quiet? That is immaterial, I can’t accept that.”
Findings further revealed that the preacher is currently working behind the scene to ‘bury’ the allegation.
The preacher has vowed to put an end to the ugly development that has soiled his hard-earned name and reputation.
We were also told that the man of God is making effort to reach out to the media to clear the mess and get the whole issue out of the public domain.
It was gathered that members of the church are also calling on Pastor Biodun to tender unreserved apology if he actually committed the sin or come out boldly to clear the air, rather than ‘waiting for God to tell him when to speak.

CRYING OVER SPILT MILK ... THE YOBE SCHOOL MASSACRE IN FOCUS : Yobe Governor In Tears At The Sight Of Corpses Of 40 Victims ... Pls NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME SCHOOL CHILDREN HAVE BEEN MASSACRED IN YOBE STATE.

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam
Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State could not hold back his tears when he visited the Damaturu’s specialist hospital where the injured from a fresh Boko Haram attack were recuperating.
The critically injured; five students, three of whom have fractures, one has a abdominal injury and another a bullet wound lied helplessly at the hospital as the governor sympathised with them. He couldn’t however hold himself at the sight of 40 corpses, all students of the School of Agriculture, Gujba, the latest victims of the Boko Haram massacre.
The Medical Director, Damaturu Specialist Hospital, Dr Garba Fika, confirmed that 40 students of the college were killed in the attack early Sunday.
Speaking amid tears, the governor urged security operatives to intensify aerial surveillance of the area.
The state deputy governor, Abubakar Aliyu, the Provost of the College Mulima Mato, and other dignitaries also shed tears at the mortuary when they saw the corpses of the students.
Schools in Yobe re-opened just 13 days ago after 10 weeks of forced closure following unrelenting Boko Haram attacks on schools, attacks which had led to the death of 29 students and three teachers.
Seven students and two teachers were in June killed at Government Secondary School Damaturu. In July, 22 students and two teachers were killed at Government Secondary School Mamudo.
Meanwhile, chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Governor Babangida Aliyu has charged security agencies to do all within their powers to halt the killing of defenceless citizens, and attacks on places of worship and educational facilities especially in the North East, by members of extremist sect, Boko Haram.
Aliyu said its members were seriously concerned at renewed attacks on innocent people, following Sunday’s killing of 40 students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, Yobe State, as well as the killing of 15 persons in Zangang community in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
“The forum is particularly alarmed that the shooting to dead of 40 students of the College of Education; Gujba, Yobe State followed the same pattern as the killing of 22 students and a teacher at Government Secondary School, Mamudo in the same state last July,” said a statement signed by Mr. Aliyu’s Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo.

Some robbery suspects engaged in a war of words on Thursday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters. The suspects, who were recently arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, traded blames over who caused their arrest. PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects, Fatai Balogun, Wale Oluwatosin and Gbenga Olusanya, were arrested shortly after robbing a family in the Iju, Ishaga area of the state.
Police authorities said after the robbery, the suspects shared the loot and went their separate ways. Oluwatosin was, however, spotted while hiding his gun at the backyard of his house. An eyewitness was said to have reported to the police and Oluwatosin was arrested. It was learnt that through his confessional statement, the police apprehended his colleagues. One of the suspects, Balogun, who claimed to be a barber, said he regretted following Oluwatosin for the robbery. He said, “He (Oluwatosin) is a very stupid boy. He is just 20-years-old and I see him like a younger brother because we grew up in the same area. Some days ago, he told me that there was a man in the area drove a nice car and he had studied the man’s movements.
“We got guns and when it was midnight, we stormed the house. We stole about N500,000 and I felt this was enough, but Oluwatosin was not satisfied. He stole CDs, laptops, seven mobile phones, video games and other items that we did not need. “Carrying such things around at night could draw suspicion to us and I told him this but he was too stubborn. As I predicted, he was the one that caused our arrest. He is stupid.” Another suspect, Olusanya, said he was not an armed robber but a smuggler. He said he knew the gang but had only followed them for one operation. He said, “I followed them for a robbery some months ago but we did not succeed. On that particular operation, we met policemen on the road and decided to turn back. However, the driver was drunk and we had an accident.
“We had to snatch another car which we used to escape. After the unsuccessful robbery, I went back to my smuggling business because I felt those guys were not serious armed robbers. They were too clumsy.” Oluwatosin, who is the youngest among the suspects, said he went into robbery so he could impress the suspects. He said the suspects usually gave him N7, 000 as an informant but he wanted to make more money which made him to lead the operation. He said, “I knew Balogun was an armed robber and I looked up to him. He used to give me N7,000 as an informant, but I felt I could do more. I did not know I would get caught after my first robbery.” Deputy Police Public Rleations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

CASTING SPELLS FOR 2015 ... PDP IN THE THROES OF A REBIRTH : APC, New PDP in Secret Pact ... New PDP is a joke, says Senate Leader Ndoma-Egba ... THISDAY

The Group of Seven Governors who broke away from the Peoples Democratic Party to form a splinter group called New PDP has reached a secret agreement with the opposition All Progressives Congress on the 2015 election, Nigeria’s Thisday newspaper has reported.

“Though the seven governors had been talking with the APC leaders for sometime, they, however, finally decided to enter into an agreement with the leaders of the opposition coalition after their last reconciliatory meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan.

The governors are Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Sule Lamido of Jigawa and Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara. THISDAY learnt that after their last meeting with the President, the dissenting governors came to the conclusion that the President was not serious about peace in PDP.

Two reasons informed this conclusion, according to sources close to the governors.
One, after the meeting, President Jonathan carried out a cabinet reshuffle and removed nine ministers, mostly those nominated by the dissenting governors and President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is also perceived to have fallen out with the President.

Among the ministers axed were Prof. Ruqqayatu Rufa’i (Education) who was nominated by Lamido, Olugbenga Ashiru (Foreign Affairs) and Mrs. Olusola Obada (Defence), both of whom were nominated by Obasanjo, and Ms. Amal Pepple (Land and Urban Development) who was said to have pleaded with Jonathan to mend fences with Amaechi.

The other reason, according to sources, is that a day after the Sunday, September 15 meeting where it was resolved that both parties should give peace a chance and continue reconciliatory meeting on October 7, the Kano PDP executive committee was dissolved without consulting Kwankwaso. A new executive council was constituted with Kwankwaso’s opponents and some of the people he had defeated, including son of late General Sani Abacha, Muhammed Abacha, given a pride of place.

“It became clear to Kwankwaso and the other governors that the President was not ready for peace,” one of the sources added.

Besides all that, however, it was further learnt that the governors were also moved to take their decision because they decided against going back to PDP and facing President Jonathan, knowing full well he would move ruthlessly against them the way he had checkmated former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva.

“So they resolved that there is no turning back. They resolved to eat the humble pie and work with APC,” another source said.
Following their discussion with the opposition party, the seven governors will join the APC jointly at a strategic time and integrate their structures with those of APC. At the time of the primaries, it was learnt that based on their discussions with APC, the New PDP governors would choose one of them to contest for APC’s presidential ticket along with other candidates from APC.

“If a candidate from the New PDP, ostensibly from the North, wins, he will pick a running mate from the APC fold in the South-east. And if an APC candidate, ostensibly from the North, wins, the New PDP will provide a running mate from the South-east,” another source from the New PDP explained.

The two sides, APC and New PDP, are said to have, however, agreed that former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Tinubu, could run for the Senate and vie for the position of Senate President from the stable.

Meanwhile, Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, Saturday challenged those claiming to belong to New PDP, a breakaway faction of PDP, to get a registration certificate, logo, and other necessary qualifications if they are serious about the existence of the group.

Ndoma-Egba, who made this submission in an interview with THISDAY, said the insinuation that there is New PDP and old PDP exists only in the realm of imagination because a party cannot exist inside another party. He emphasised that the only PDP in existence was registered and officially recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to the senate leader, organisations come into existence when they are created either by statutes or registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission. He said in the case of a political party, such party must be registered with INEC, insisting that as long as New PDP has not met those conditions, its existence is only imaginary.

“Which one is New PDP? A New PDP with registration certificate?” Ndoma-Egba asked in a tone apparently intended to belittle the PDP faction. “When you have a legal personality, it is either you are a natural person or a corporate person. Corporate means that you are a creation of law, either you are created by statutes or you are registered by Corporate Affairs Commission or you are registered as a political party by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Is there any party called New PDP with a registration certificate?”

He said, “In the eyes of the law, there is just one PDP. I don’t know why these New PDP, old PDP are being dramatised. If they want a new PDP, they should obtain registration certificate for New PDP with a logo, with its colour. So, until that happens, you cannot say there is New PDP or old PDP. There is only one PDP. The PDP that has registration certificate is the PDP.”

The senate leader also dismissed claims by Alhaji Abubakar Baraje – national chairman of New PDP – that he is the PDP national chairman as a daydream. He, however, advised aggrieved persons within PDP to wait for the outcome of the reconciliation meeting slated for October 7.

“I can wake up now and say I am the President of Nigeria. Does that make me president of Nigeria? Every party’s national officers are registered with INEC. That is why INEC supervises their national conventions to elect their party officers. We went into this convention that ended up in this walkout because INEC, as the regulator, said it had made this observation – you did not follow due process – and we went back and INEC was there and they have the record of who the national officers are.

“If I stand up today and say ‘I’m the coach of Super Eagles,’ does it change the fact that Stephen Keshi is the coach of Super Eagles? Let us wait till October 7. October 7 will come and go,” Ndoma-Egba said.

He also debunked the notion that the National Assembly had been opposed to the calls for a national conference until recently, when Senate President David Mark tended to have a change of mind. He said the federal legislature had always supported a conference that would provide the platform for discussion among Nigerians.

Ndoma-Egba, who said he agreed with the allegation that the origin of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) was dubious, added that what the National Assembly had opposed was the agitation to make the conference sovereign. He noted, however, that as long as the various institutions and powers that exist today in Nigeria emerged through the constitution, the claim of dubiety that heralded its advent had been ratified.

The senate leader said agitation for a sovereign national conference was belated, out of tune with reality, and misplaced, arguing that those making the agitation have also by their conducts and submission to the provisions of the constitution in the last 14 years, ratified it.

He said, “The National Assembly has never been against a national conference or a national dialogue or whatever you call it. Where we have consistently had problem is when you insist that the conference or dialogue or whatever should be made sovereign. That is where we have a difficulty. Let us say that our constitution has dubious origin. I concede that point. But are we saying that we don’t have a constitution? We have conducted elections under that dubious constitution. People had emerged as presidents. (Olusegun) Obasanjo emerged as president; (Umaru) Yar’Adua emerged as president. Now it is (Goodluck) Jonathan. They have exercised presidential authority which we have submitted to. Governors have emerged under that constitution. We have submitted to those governors.

“A National Assembly has emerged. In fact, the office of president, offices of governors were created by that constitution. All the institutions of power that we know today, including the court, were created by that constitution and we have submitted to those institutions and powers. So, the issue of the dubious origin of that constitution can no longer arise because we have ratified whatever defects there are in the constitution and the sovereignty which we signed and derived from the people of Nigeria. There is no argument that the sovereignty of this country is derived from the people of Nigeria but that sovereignty is expressed in the constitution.

“Even the people who are still insisting that the constitution did not derive from the people have submitted to the constitution and ratified the constitution by conduct. You can ask for a new constitution but not because there is no constitution, because you have already ratified that one by conduct. So, the constitution which belongs to the people is now expressed in that constitution. When you now say a sovereign national conference, tell me, what and what and what will make it sovereign?”

THE 50 YOBE SCHOOL CHILDREN MASSACRE IN FOCUS : Pres Jonathan meets security chiefs Sunday Night, says ‘I’m depressed’

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday had an emergency meeting with service chiefs over the killing of 50 students of the College of Agriculture in Yobe State.
Jonathan disclosed this while fielding questions during the Presidential Media Chat broadcast live on television stations. He had earlier at the 53rd Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, admitted that activities of the sect were depressing him and his administration.
He said after meeting with the service chiefs, he directed them to meet and come up with ideas on how to step up the efforts aimed at curbing the attacks and killings by the insurgents which he described as “ embarrassing.” The President said, “Like I said earlier today (Sunday), sometimes one needs a lot of courage to move on. My seat as the President can be very hot and can also be very cold. “I held a meeting with service chiefs on the killings of students in Yobe State before coming for this media chat. We discussed and resolved that we must do more. “You will agree with me that incidence of attacks came down after I declared state of emergency in some states but it is coming up again. I have asked the service chiefs to meet again now and see what we can do to stop these embarrassing attacks.”
When asked to respond to allegations that operatives of the State Security Service killed innocent people alleged to be members of Boko Haram at the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja, the President said there was enough reason to believe that those shot were suspected terrorists. Jonathan, who added that some of those arrested had made confessional statements, said that security agencies had even foiled several plots by insurgents to bomb Abuja this month. He said, “I have been briefed about it and people have made confessional statements. That is why I say sometimes, some of these people who call for probe don’t mean well for this country. And I always say that when there are confrontations between certain operatives and criminals in a place where people live, maybe one or two people who may be innocent probably might be affected during the exchange of fire. But definitely, there were Boko Haram elements among them .
Again, if you monitor global trend, there was this feeling about Al-Qeada network having links with Al-Shabab and Boko Haram because these criminal gangs have networks. And the feeling was that in September, they would bomb many cities across the world to commemorate 9/11. It happened in many parts of the world. What happened in Nairobi, Kenya, is being linked to that and people attempted to also bomb Abuja in September. “Some were arrested and some were killed but people confessed. There were obviously Boko Haram elements among them.” At the Independence anniversary church service tagged “Living with certainty in uncertain times,” the President said he lacked words and courage to explain to the bereaved families, and indeed Nigerians, what happened to the College of Agriculture students on Sunday.
While describing Boko Haram activities and other challenges facing his administration as creations of the devil meant to slow him down, Jonathan vowed that the insurgents would not succeed. He pledged that although forces of evil would continue to attempt to drag the nation back, he would leave the country better than he met it. He said, “Today, you will agree with me that if you were in my shoes, you will lack words to say. We had this programme in mind when we went to bed last night that by this time, we would all gather here to thank God for what he has done for this great country. “But then, only a few minutes after midnight, reports came in that about 21 students were murdered in Yobe State by a group that described themselves as Boko Haram.
“If you are wearing my shoes, what courage will you have to stand here before Nigerians? What message will you send to Nigerians and the parents of these people, our future leaders, students of a college of agriculture?
“Will you say that the killing of these students is political? The students belonged to which political group? People who killed them don’t even know them. Will you say it is ethnic cleansing? They belonged to which ethnic group in Nigeria? “Will you say it was based on religious belief or what? These killed students, are they Christians, Muslims or what? This is the situation almost on a daily basis. It’s quite depressing! “But having listened to the message of the CAN President (Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor), you will agree with me that all of us have hope. By God’s grace, we will get to where we want to get to as a nation.
“The journey of a nation is just like the journey of an individual. We will encounter obstacles. Sometimes, it gets darker when you are getting nearer. The challenges we are seeing now are very transient and we will surely get over them. “No Boko Haram or any group can suffer this country. We may suffer pains just like Jesus Christ said at critical moment that though the spirit is willing, the body is weak. “I believe these challenges are the creations of the devil to slow down our development as a nation but we have reached the turning point where we must all move to join the developed society.”

BREAKING THE AGE BARRIER IN ACADEMICS : Mother, son defy odds and graduate together with PhDs On The Same Day ... HD12News

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A local mom and her son have achieved great heights in education, but it didn't come easily. The pair recently earned their PhDs on the very same day, a goal that seemed impossible when their long journey began.
"Never in a thousand, million, trillion years [did I expect to get my PhD]. The thought of becoming a doctor anyone was far fetched," said Dr. Maurice McBride.
He got his diploma at a ceremony in Minneapolis, MN in August, but the day wasn't just about his accomplishment. It was about sharing the stage with his mother.
"I never thought I would get chance to see my mother walk across the stage and then she turned around and saw me walk across the stage," he said.
It was a day that seemed nearly impossible considering where they started.
"At the age of 13 I got pregnant with Maurice," said Dr. Vickie McBride.
She was a young mother growing up in Waynesboro. She said, "It was shunned upon and of course the older people in the community were whispering."
But that didn't stop her or her mother. Vickie stayed in school while her mother, a retired teacher, helped out with Maurice.
"As a teenager I continued my education. That was never an option," explained Vickie.
She made it to college and graduate school all while raising Maurice and eventually 3 other children.
"I had to figure out how to work and how to parent and how to manage school all at the same time." she said.
Maurice had his own struggles. At just 16 years old he dropped out of high school.
"[I] started hanging out with some of the wrong people and got into some trouble," he explained.
After ending up in a juvenile probation facility he knew it was time to turn his life around. He said, "I picked up the bible and I started reading and I was like it all makes sense. I see how it actually comes to fruition. I see how I ended up here."
He got his GED and then pursued a music career. He signed a record deal with Capital Records, but he never stopped his education. It was something that was instilled in him by his mother and grandmother.
"As a recording artist I also attended school online," said Maurice.
He kept going after he left the music world. He went on to graduate school, becoming a professor at Paine College and then one day he called his mom.
"I said 'hey I think I'm gonna get my PhD. You wanna do this with me?' 'No that's okay. You bumped your head, but you can go ahead and you can do it. I'm done with school'," he recalled.
After talking it over, they decided to do it together. Vickie graduated with her PhD in K-12 Education and Maurice in Organizational Management from Capella University.
"I didn't let my situation define who I was. I defined my situation. I looked at my situation and I told situation this is where we are going and this is what we are doing," said Vickie.
A proud day for both a mother and a son.
"I was so proud of him because I knew where he had come from," said Vickie.
"This is who she really is despite what she's been through," said Maurice. "This is how I've always seen her and now I'm like 'hey look this is her' with the cape and the supermommy uniform."
And they want their story to be a lesson to those struggling now.
"For those who have gone through [tough situations]. You can be successful. You can be anything. You can do anything once you make up your mind that that is what you want to do. Set a goal and go for it," said Vickie.
Maurice says he wants his mother to write a book with him about their story. He's also working to convince her to go to law school but she says she'll sit that one out. She just plans to be in the audience for that graduation.
They are both working as teachers now. Vickie teaches middle school and college in Virginia and Maurice is a professor of business at Paine College.

CASTING SPELLS FOR 2015 ... HEAD OF THE JONATHAN CAMPAIGN FORCES DECLARES HIM WINNER AHEAD OF ELECTIONS : 2015: Jonathan has won already –Dokubo-Asari ... SunNews

2015: Jonathan has won already –Dokubo-Asari
Despite the opposition to the 2015 re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan, Leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has said there is nothing to worry about, that the President has already won.
Dokubo-Asari’s statement is coming at a time opposition to the 2015 presidential ambition of Jonathan by the Alhaji Kawu Baraje-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is on the prowl.
He wondered why Jonathan would be talking and discussing with Governor Sule Lamido’s group whom he called political miscreants, people who do not have political value.
Dokubo-Asari said Lamido and his group were irrelevant to the realization of the president’s ambition, querying: “If Lamido could not deliver Jigawa State to Jonathan in 2011, of what relevance is he in realizing it in 2015?”
Reacting to Lamido’s interview in last week’s Sunday Sun in which the governor said, “Dokubo-Asari is a small boy, his entire clan, I don’t think they are up to one million people. If his entire clan are not up to one million people, you just ignore him,” Dokubo-Asari lampooned Lamido, saying that people like him should not even be listened to at all.
“Jonathan has already won. Whether they vote or they don’t vote, that is their business. He will win and if they like, they should go and hang themselves. For people like Sule Lamido to even be listened to, is very regrettable. This is a man who is living according to his antecedents; a man who rebelled against the greatest Northern political ideologue, Mallam Aminu Kano. These people have never been on the side of their people.
“I would forgive him because Ijaw people are not protesting about scientific census. It is people like Sule Lamido that are protesting that the chairman of the National Population Commission should be sacked. It clearly shows that they have something to hide.
“There is no where in the world where the arid part of the country is more populated. All over the world, population is at the coast. Population centers are at the coast, where there are economic activities. We live in a scientific world. So, when the time comes, he will know. We don’t even need to be 200 people to teach him a lesson and put sand in his mouth.

SEE POT CALLING KETTLE BLACK ... YEYE DE SMELL : ASUU strike: Lecturers are only fighting for allowances, not better education – FG ... Nigeria News (AS IF THE POLITICIANS AND THEIR APPOINTEES ARE FIGHTING FOR ANYTHING ELSE?)

ASUU strike
The rift between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has deepened even as the FG accused the organization of fighting for its own selfish interests and not for the benefit of  Nigerian students.
The  government has accused the university body of not being honest and sincere about the real motive behind the almost 3-month old strike which has crippled academic activities in the country’s universities.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students Matters, Jude Imagwe, reportedly stated that the claim by the union that its action was to restore infrastructural decay in universities was nothing but a lie, noting that ASUU was fighting for allowances.
Comrade Imagwe was speaking in Abuja when he received some youth groups, who were on a visit to his office.
His words: “They initially told us that it was about infrastructure, but it is about allowances. N30b has been released for the payment of their accumulated allowances, and N100b earmarked for infrastructural development. It is important for the public to know that government did not say this is all that it will give, but government says go and start the payment with this amount and let us know the amount it will add.”
Meanwhile, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) will tomorrow join ASUU on strike as the union said it has mobilized its members across the country to embark on industrial action over alleged stoppage of their salaries for two months.
SSANU, in a letter, dated 27 September, 2013, and addressed to its branch chairmen in all the universities in the country, directed its members to stay away from work from tomorrow until the salaries are fully paid.
The President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke, said the strike will be total, while the General Secretary, who signed the letter directing members to stay at home from tomorrow, Comrade Promise Adewusi, said no member should go back to work until a counter directive was given.
Adewusi stated that the union took the decision following its letters to the vice-chancellors in universities, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Ministers of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu and Education, Nyesom Wike, as well as the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie.
In the meantime, the suspended strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is to resume on Friday.
The union alleged insincerity and failure of the Federal Government to honour agreement entered with the union.
The union also passed a vote of no confidence on the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), alleging that the board has failed to meet the needs and demands of polytechnic education in the country.

A LOVE TRIANGLE WITH NEAR FATAL CONSEQUENCES IN KANO ... WHATS THE MATTER WITH MEN THESE DAYS? : Man attempts suicide after girlfriend rejection

A young man on Tuesday attempted to commit suicide in Kano after a lady he was said to be admiring rejected his advances in favour of his elder brother.
Mudan Soja, who is said to be in his twenties, was reportedly angered by her action, following which he tried to end his life by ingesting insecticide.
His relations told Sunday Trust that he had to be rushed to the hospital, where he was treated.
It was further gathered that Mudan Soja fell in love with the divorcee, not knowing that his brother was already seeing her.
“Mudan doesn’t know that his brother was also in a relationship with the girl, until last Monday when some people saw them together and told him,” his friend who does not want to named, said.
“He therefore confronted the girl to enquire about what he heard, but unfortunately for him the girl told him to leave her alone as she has already chosen his brother over him. Feeling bitter about it, he sent for insecticide on Tuesday morning which he took. But he was rushed to the hospital by his brothers and was lucky to survive the poison,” he said.
One of the Mudan’s brothers, Abdulmajid, corroborated the account, adding that he had vowed to kill himself since the night he was turn away by the lady, claiming that it will be easier for him to die than to live without her.
“He asked us to forgive him in the morning and also requested us to seek his friends’ forgiveness. Unknown to us, he was attempting to kill himself. Immediately the boy he sent for the insecticide brought it, he consumed it and slumped. But he was lucky as there were people that saw him and they came over quickly and carried him to the hospital where he was treated,” he said.
However, the divorcee at the centre of the drama said even with the incident, her choice remained Mudan’s elder brother, who she said was her first love even before she got married.
“I was told that he took insecticide to kill himself because I rejected him. Even though I pity him, there is nothing I can do as I am still in love with his elder brother,” she said.

THE TARABA STATE BROUHAHA ... IN A NATION BESEIGED BY CROOKISH POLITICAL GLADIATORS : Police detain Suntai’s spokesman, 4 others ... SundayTrust.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai of Taraba State, Silvanus Giwa, was on Friday arrested and detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the State’s police command, Jalingo.
Giwa, alongside four of his friends were arrested at about 10 p.m at Sinaf Suite, opposite Catholic Cathedral in Mile 6 area of Jalingo on the order of the police commissioner.
When our correspondent visited the state police command on Saturday morning, Giwa alongside his four friends were seen sitting down at police CID office.
Narrating the incident, Giwa told Sunday Trust that he was relaxing alongside his friends when policemen stormed the place and said he was under arrest.
He said four of his friends were equally arrested and brought to the police station where they spent the night.
By the time of filing this report, he said no reason was given for the arrest, adding that he is yet to know the time when they would regain freedom from the police detention.
Sunday Trust gathered from sources that the arrest may not be unconnected with Giwa’s recent media interview where he said the acting governor; Alhaji Garba Umar was running a parallel government to his boss, Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai.
When contacted, Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Joseph Kwaji, however, said he was not aware of the arrest.
Reacting to the development, the former Commissioner for Information in Taraba State, Emmanuel Bello said, “The arrest, torture and continuous detention of Governor Suntai’s media aide, by the police in Jalingo is the latest proof of the return to jungle justice and a reign of terror under Alhaji Garba Umar”.
In a swift reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to Taraba State Acting Governor, Kefas Sule, told Sunday Trust that his boss, the acting governor said he did not give any order for such arrest.
According to him, the acting governor, Alhaji Garba Umar had summoned a meeting with security chiefs in the State to brief him on what really transpired.

AN INTERVIEW THAT READS LIKE FICTION BUT IS TRUE FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH : Why We Killed Gen Ironsi..Gen Jerry Useni .. PremiumTimes

Lt. General Jeremiah Useni needs no introduction. The prominent role he played during the reign of late Head of State, Sani Abacha, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is well known. However, there are two things about Jeremiah Useni, who was referred to as ‘Jerry Boy’ at the time. He was indeed a Boy, because he joined the Army at the age of 14. Firstly, he was one of the soldiers who fired shots during the coup against General Ironsi in which the General was killed in Ibadan. Mr. Useni was also the closest person to General Abacha up to his last moments. This interview, conducted in Hausa by the Hausa language newspaper, Rariya, and translated to English by PREMIUM TIMES’ Sani Tukur, reveals a lot of things many of us didn’t know, including the conspiracies that denied him the opportunity of succeeding Mr. Abacha after he died. Enjoy…

You joined the Army as a fourteen year old, and you were posted to England for a Course at sixteen, how did you feel at the time?
Honestly, it was like a dream to me because I broke my left leg during a game of football, just one year after I joined the Army. As a young footballer, I had very strong shooting ability with my left leg. Anyone who was unfortunate to be hit with my shots really suffered no matter their size. I spent about four months at the hospital In Kaduna. Most of the hospital staffs at the time were Europeans, and they were very efficient. They joked a lot with their patients and they related with you as if you had known them for ages. One day, they decided to come and test all of us and see those who had made progress, so that they would be discharged. When they came to me, they asked; ‘can you stand up?’ And I said, ‘yes’. Then I was asked to stand up and walk. The whiteman said, ‘this one is ok now, he can be discharged’.
Later, they said there would be exams to select those who would go to England, and I had spent four years without studies or anything. However, there was a senior officer who was teaching me, and I went to write the exams, and I passed. I was not even sure we were really going to Europe until one day when they came to the dining room and called out our names, five of us; they asked us to go to a particular building, that our attention was needed there. On getting there, we saw that they had prepared omelet and other kinds of delicacies of the Europeans. At the time, we were used to eating Garri only, we either soak or prepare Eba with one green soup like that. We realised that we might really be going to Europe. That was how I went as a very young boy, and I thank God for that because before we left Nigeria, they were paying us one naira, in fact, we were first paid seventy kobo, until after one year, when they increased it to one naira.
When I went to England, under the Boys Company battalion, they started paying us four pounds after only two months. I wrote to my father to tell him that we were now receiving four pounds as pay, and I asked him to pay any tax he was asked to pay because I was also enjoying. I told him that just to show him how happy I was.
Many people were afraid of joining the Army at the time you joined. Were your parents alive at the time?
They were alive. It was my father’s friends that did not want me to join. My father was a Royal Guard, and you know a royal guard does not fear anything. He was the most influential official next to the emir, who knows any judge at time? We didn’t even see a policeman until we went to Jos. My father’s friends were advising him not to risk his only son, because I was an only child, but he said since that was what I wanted, I should go ahead, he told them that only God would decide if I live or die.
You had some time with the Sardauna and his Ministers, such as Michael Audu Buba?
We just hear them speak on the radio, or read about them in Newspapers, but I saw Sardauna a lot when I was in Boys Company. He used to visit us, because there was a sugar cane farm, where we used to train, and after such trainings, most of us do get some sugar cane in the farm. Sardauna used to come there and we saw him a lot. I first saw him in 1957.
After your return from England, Sardauna , Tafawa Balewa and others were killed in 1966. Where were you at the time?
I was with 4th Battalion Ibadan. The coup came to us as a surprise, like a thief in the night. We just heard in the morning that Sardauna and the rest were killed. In fact, we did not get the news on time. Where was our C.O Lt. Col. Largema? And Brig. Maimalari and Col Kur Mohammed? We learnt they were all killed. And we asked, what type of coup was that? At the time, we were not concerned with where you came from or what your religion was. As long as you were from the north, we cherish each other so much.
So we organised ourselves and agreed that what happened was very dangerous. We also learnt later that a broad government was being formed. A northerner will be transferred to the South, while a Southerner will be transferred to the north. General Hassan katsina was the governor of the north at the time. People like Kashim Ibrahim were also gone. So those of us, Army officers from the north were very angry really.
What was your rank at the time?
I was a Second Lieutenant then, my mates were Ibrahim Babangida, Garba Duba, Mamman Magoro, and the rest. I was together with Yelwa in 4th Battalion, while Duba was in Kaduna. There was another officer from Niger state, I have forgotten his name, and he was even a Senator recently. We realised that Igbos were behind all the killings, and were angered the more because they were not even arrested. Although, they were later arrested and taken to jail, but information came to us that they were just enjoying themselves there. Even their ranks were returned to them and they were wearing their uniforms inside the jail.
We started meeting to find a way out. Our Brigade Commander, Maimalari was killed, Col. Pam, Tafawa Balewa and the rest were all killed. We continued to meet in secret and strategising on how to take revenge.
But while that was going on, words started going round about what the Igbo officers were saying: that they had killed the snake, but had failed to cut off the head. Which meant those of us left might make them suffer later, that there was therefore the need to finish us off. Instead of them to show remorse and apologise, they were planning another sinister attacks. We were together with Col. Remawa at the time, he was serving in Abeokuta, and we heard of a grand plot to kill our emirs. A meeting of all emirs was called in Ibadan, all our emirs gathered in Ibadan, that the head of state, Ironsi, would address them. So we said, are we going to let him come, address them and leave? Or should we just kill him or what? Our fear was that he was in the company of our emirs, and you know bullets do not select whom to hit. What do we do? We don’t want even a single emir to die.
We also considered arresting him at his lodge before he goes to meet with them. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi was the governor of South West at the time, and the head of state, Ironsi, was staying in his house in Ibadan. So we don’t want a situation where they would say he conspired with us. So we decided the best thing to do was to open fire there even if Governor Fajuyi was also caught, so that they would just be buried together, and that was what happened.
Before that time, a party was organised for officers, they brought all sort of drinks for us there. In fact, since joining the Army, I had never seen so many assorted drinks like the one they brought for us that day. The plan was to get us all drunk, so that they would just come and open fire on us and kill us all. That was what they planned for us at the 4th Battalion Ibadan because we were the most feared, because we were the ones who lost a brigade Commander, Lagerma. When Murtala returned from Lagos empty handed, everyone was just crying because Lagerma was a very nice man. After the Coup, Gowon was made the Head of state.
When Ironsi was arrested, T.Y. Danjuma was said to be in Ibadan, and there were reports that you, Duba and Remawa were the ones who arrested him?
It was Garba Dada, the guy from Niger state, the one I was telling you was a Senator recently. He was the Adjutant General at the time, and he was our co-ordinator. We did not stay in one place to meet. We used to drive up to beyond Ijebu-Ode meeting inside the car and then turn back.
Was Domkat Bali also in Ibadan at the time?
No. He was at Abeokuta. In fact they were the ones who started shooting before us. We said, if we just kept quiet, they would have arrested our Boys there.
Why was Gowon selected after the coup?
He was the most senior officer at the time. But there was another reason too. There were people like T.Y. Danjuma and Murtala. But Murtala was a bit less than Gowon in rank, and was too close to us.
After Ironsi was killed, the country was plunged into a civil war. You were heading the logistics and in charge of most war equipment. What were the challenges you faced during the war?
At times, it is good to be in the forefront in battle, instead of nominating someone. Facing the enemy is a difficult task that requires effective strategy. You need to put in place how to effectively block the supply of enough ammunitions and back up to them. If you do that, it will not be difficult to finish them off. That is the role I played, I ensured that our troops get enough ammunitions and logistic support all the time.
We started with General Danjuma, he was the C.O. and then Mamman Shuwa, who was later transferred to Kaduna as the GOC. So also was Martins Adamu. Adamu was leading Ogoja troop, Danjuma was in Nsukka, and I was in Abakaliki.
What do you think were the reasons Gowon was removed?
People began to feel he was distancing himself from them. He was unreachable. The top officers of the time felt he was building a wall between them, and so they felt there was need for change. But he was not killed, they waited until he was out of the country to Kampala, Uganda before they toppled him, and asked him not to return. Murtala was then made his successor.
How was your relationship with Murtala?
He was a gentleman. I could remember when it happened, we just returned to Jos with my troop. We moved all our military hardware on our vehicles and train and we even had to hire more vehicles. When we arrived Jos, we went round the town with our entourage up to the Government House just to show the people we have come, only to learn the following morning that Gowon had been toppled. I was a Major at the time.
When Murtala was killed, it was observed that most of the perpetrators were from Plateau, such as Dimka and Bisalla; how did you feel?
Honestly, I was really surprised. We were honest and cordial with each other, not knowing that some people had sinister motive. When we did our own, it was revenge against the Igbos, but people we don’t understand did this one. But we thank God that they were identified after investigations. It was Dimka and his people that were planning to return Gowon to power. But Bisalla, was saying ‘I am here, why should you go looking for someone outside’? This country is lucky to have people like General T.Y. Danjuma. When Obasanjo became the Head of State, he was supposed to be the second in command, but Danjuma said no, there was no need for Murtala to be killed, and an Obasanjo was made the head of State, with a T.Y. Danjuma second in command. Then Shehu Yar’adua was brought in when he was a Lieutenant Colonel but he was doubly promoted to a Brigadier General and made the second in command to Obasanjo. Yar’adua was a gentleman, and that decision was taken to promote peace in the land.
How did you meet Abacha, because you were the closest person to him?
All I can say is that it was God who crossed our path together. Firstly, I am a Tarok man, and he was not. He was a Muslim, and I am not. I was also much closed to Garba Duba. What happened was that even while we were young officers after the civil war, when a small town near Enugu was captured, then a message came that I was needed in Lagos. They told me I would be going to Europe. At the time, there was no daily flight to Lagos. So I took a Land Rover, and by 9am the following day, I was at the office. However, I was told I still had three weeks before I departed. So I went back to Enugu. We were all Lieutenants then and they said we should be changed because people in Kaduna were afraid. They said the 4th battalion should move to Kaduna, while the 3rd Battalion in Kaduna should move to Ibadan.
It so happened Abacha was the officer responsible for the movements of the Battalion from Kaduna to Ibadan, and I was in charge of those moving from Ibadan to Kaduna. They were the first to arrive, so I went to receive them at the train station and show them were to eat and sleep. But Abacha waited at the train station so that any train that brought soldiers from Kaduna, he would make sure soldiers from Ibadan followed the train back to Kaduna. We continued to do that until all the soldiers were successfully ferried. We then joined the remaining vehicles back to Kaduna, and I left him at Ibadan. That was how we became friends. And we then went on to meet at 2nd Division Ibadan.
That was also where we met with Duba. He was at Asaba with his Armoured Division, and I was at the Headquarters at Benin. Abacha was at Tom Ikimi’s town. We went out together anytime we met, and we even used to sleep in the same house. Our friendship became so strong that every weekend we visited each other’s houses and spend the weekend together. We were going to the Houses on turn-by-turn basis, up until the time Duba left the Army because of an ailment that was disturbing him. He went to a hospital in Saudi Arabia three times before he said he was tired and would simply retire. The three of us were very much close. Nothing came in between us, and people were even calling us ‘triplets’. That is God you know. That is why I always tell people that fighting is not good. If there were tribal clashes, the three of us would not have been friends.
During the time of Abacha was Head of State, people were saying you were in fact the President, because Abacha was not even seen in public much, and he was not close to his deputy. Others were saying the coup allegations against Obasanjo and Yaradu’a was just fabricated to break them down. What is the truth of the matter?
I have been asked this question several times, and my answer always was that the coup attempt was real. Even if I don’t like you, would I just pick you up and lock you up? There was a coup attempt, and I said this even while Obasanjo was president. When General Diya was being tried, you saw how he was kneeling down to beg Major Al-Mustapha who was not in anywhere close to him in rank. Definitely there was a coup attempt, but because Abacha was a good man, he did not kill them. When Obasanjo was a military Head of state, there was a coup attempt, and he enacted a law that killed the perpetrators.
But he was not killed, he was only jailed for life, and they said when another government comes, they can decide to release him. He was in jail when Abacha died, politics returned and so there was selfishness and all sort of conspiracies. He knows he was the one who signed the law that said even if you did not participate in a coup, and that you only heard of it but decided to keep quiet, you are culpable, and you face the same penalty as those who planned to execute the coup. He made that law.
When Abdulsalam assumed leadership, there was a debate whether he should be released or not, but eventually they decided to release him.
People also said General Yar’adua had put pressure on your government, insisting at the constitutional conference that power must be transferred to a civilian authority, and he must have known about the coup because he had known about all the others in the past?
A. Well I cannot say anything about what I have no adequate knowledge about. Yar’adua and I were very close. He was my good friend.
When you were FCT Minister, you set up a committee of traditional rulers in which you were the chairman
The name of the committee was Traditional Rulers Forum and Leaders of Thought.
Why was it formed, and what was the achievement of that committee?
We met a lot of problems on the ground when we came to power, and I realised that they were relegated to the background, they were not revered and their advice were not heeded, but whenever there was any crises people rushed to them for solutions. So I set up that committee so that traditional rulers would know what was going on, and also know that they were highly valued by the government. There were actually two committees, one of traditional rulers and the other of leaders of thought. We did not claim to know everything, so our success came in the fact that the traditional rulers were telling us what was going on among the people, and what we needed to do for the people.
It is ideal to be discussing matters of national security with them, but it is never done until something happens before you see officials rushing to them in confusion. One day, Abacha informed governors to include them in their security meetings. When a crisis occurred in Kano, Abacha called the emir and asked him what was happening? The emir replied that they had discussed and there was no tension anymore, and the emir told him ‘had we not been involved you would have heard of violence all over’.
We also looked at the allocations to traditional rulers and realised that if you were not in good terms with the governor, he would deprived you of funding. He will not renovate your palace, unless if you are subservient to his wishes. Emir of Zaria was getting only 3% and the Sultan was not getting up to 5%. Some Traditional rulers from the South were so surprised when they heard that. You know there, most of them are even businessmen. So we set up an investigative committee to help the emirs, under the leadership of the emir of Gwandu, Jakolo. Emirs of the past were the ones who give orders for something to be brought to them, and it was brought, but emirs these days have burden and many take them to court for daring to touch anything belonging to them. So we felt pity on them and took the report to Abacha saying 10% is too much, but they should at least get 5% of allocations under their domain.
Instead of holding these meetings in Abuja alone, we were holding them in various states. We started with Oyo, then Enugu. We were to hold the 3rd one in Kaduna then Abacha died. The emirs and chiefs were enjoying it because they were getting to know each other well and their domains too. I could remember one day, Abacha was seeing off the emir of Katsina after a visit, and when he saw me, he told Abacha,’ this is our Chairman, he told me we are going to Enugu and I have never been to Enugu before’. He said if it were before, if he told his people that he would be visiting Igbo land, they would ask him if he was crazy, he also said, ‘but now that everything is fine, I will go’.
Will you like to see such a committee continue to exist?
Of course yes. They need to continue with it. One day, I met the Oba of Lagos, he told me he had travelled very far and had seen a very mighty forest without a single tree.
Just like you said, you, General Abacha and Duba were like triplets. There were reports that you were together the night he died. How did you receive the news of his death the following morning?
I was very sad, despite the fact that I was not told in time. It was much later that I was told I was needed urgently at the villa. In fact, at first, I was even denied entry. One of my boys became angry and corked his gun and said ‘was he not here last night’? Before they allowed us to get in. I got there almost 11am. I met IGP Coomasie and other top government dignitaries there, those that were informed before me, in spite of the fact that his family knew I was his best friend. At first, I thought the family was informed that I had a hand in his death. They started asking me questions about what I knew about the death. We were together since we were junior officers, is it now that I would kill him? After their investigations, they realised that I had no hand in his dead.
After Abacha’s death, many thought you would be the next Head of State, and there were some arguments. Why did you not succeed him?
There was politics in the whole thing. There were several meetings, but no unified decision was reached despite the fact that I was the most senior officer of the lot. In the end, they said Abdulsalami had been selected, because he was the most senior in terms of office. I left without taking any appointment that is why up till today, no one is accusing me of anything. That was what happened.
How did you feel when that happened? Did you feel cheated or not?
As a Christian, I believe in destiny
In the past, northerners are ahead of the South in terms of governance and administration, but today, the north has been relegated to the background, no one is talking about a unified north anymore, just a community divided along ethnic and religious loyalties. The Southerners also have differences of religion and ethnicity, but it is not a source of conflict there. How did the north get here?
Even you journalists know the kind of cordial relationships that existed in the past. Truth is both sides are at fault. We northerners have our own fault, and those opposing the north also have their own fault. Did the Southerners plunge us into the crises we are witnessing today? Many innocent people have been killed today, to the extent that there was an attempt to kill the emir of Kano, just due to lack of security. Not to talk of the Plateau. One cannot say these crises are as a result of religious differences because it appears to surpass that.
But I believe we found ourselves in this mess because we have turned our backs on God, and we are mostly selfish in our affairs. We have hardened our hearts and are cheating each other, which will not take us anywhere. Everything now is based on religious on ethnic affiliations. Why won’t we continue to suffer? If we had not united ourselves as northerners in the past when some Southerners killed our leaders we would not have overcome. But today, this one will say I am a Muslim, while the other one will say, I am a Christian. How can we make progress? We cannot make progress by calling each other despicable names. Our leaders in the past did not do that.
How can relationships among northern people be improved?
Honestly, enough is enough. Emirs should be visiting each other. We can solve this problem, if we sit down and talk to each other. Emirs have stopped visiting each other. If you are angry with someone, and then he visits you, I am sure you will forgive him. Our governors too have a problem. We organised a meeting in Kaduna, the governors came and everything was so good, then the following day, only Governor Yakowa turned up, maybe he himself came because he was the host. They don’t co-operate. We have to sit and love one another, cry and laugh together. Otherwise, the upcoming generation will not inherit the right things from us.
From the time he was the head of state up till today, many people have different interpretations of who Abacha was. Some see him as a hero, while others see him as a dictator who trampled on peoples’ right especially those opposed to him. Can you briefly describe him?
Many people misunderstood who Abacha was. He was very honest and well mannered. Whenever we sat together, everyone would give their opinion, but whenever he decided, that was all. He knew how to run the economy of a nation despite the fact that he did not train as an economist. When he was the Head of State, he refused to take any loan from the World Bank, so no one dared undermine his authority. But today, you can say all sorts of things against the president and sleep peacefully in your house. So Abacha was a man who believed in law and order. He was also a man who believed in giving everyone their due. He used to listen to any complaint brought to him that concerned matters of state, and he always made sure he solved the problem. I knew him very well.
