Jonathan lists priorities in 2013

•Flood, erosion control, jobs, others to get priority attention
From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja
President Goodluck Jonathan has said his administration will give priority to flood and erosion control, rehabilitation and expansion of federal roads, improved power supply, as well as the continued rehabilitation, upgrading and reactivation of the national rail network in 2013.
The President, in the traditional message to Nigerians to usher in the New Year, also listed employment generation and wealth creation as areas that will remain a primary objective of his socio-economic agenda for this year. Jonathan who thanked God for bringing us and the nation safely through the past year to the beginning of 2013, assured that by God’s grace, the New Year will be a much better year for Nigerians and the country.
“Creating more employment opportunities for our youth and graduates of our universities is an imperative that will continue to underpin our drive for massive economic growth, the rapid expansion of our manufacturing and industrial base, and the productive diversification of our national economy. In this regard, we will continue to provide the necessary enabling environment for the private sector to thrive”.
On peace and security, Jonathan insists that it remains pre-requisite conditions for the full realization of his administration’s objectives, assuring that this year, more will be done to further empower security agencies who are working in collaborative partnerships with the international community to stem the scourge of terrorism in the country and enhance the security of lives and property nationwide.
“I also want to assure Nigerians that we will refuse to be discouraged by those who have taken it upon themselves to pick on every initiative and effort of this administration. We remain resolutely committed to the rule of law, Due Process and fair play in all circumstances.
Our democracy continues to grow, and the scope for human freedom continues to expand. It is an achievement that we will continue to build upon. I say it again, we are determined to continue to push forward. We will do more, not less.
We will remain focused. “For your part, dear compatriots, I urge that you all include in your New Year resolutions a commitment to do more this year to support the implementation of the Federal Government’s Agenda for National Transformation in every possible way.
That is all I ask for. The task of making our dear nation a much better place for present and future generations cannot be left to government alone. Leaders and followers alike have critical roles to play in our march towards the fulfillment of our great national potentials.
“Let us all therefore, resolve as we celebrate the New Year to place the higher interests of national unity, peace, stability and progress above all other considerations and work harder in our particular fields of human endeavour to contribute more significantly to the attainment of our collective aspirations”, he said.
The President said his administration last year “achieved a lot in terms of the positive transformation of vital sectors of our national life such as public infrastructure, power supply, oil and gas, transportation, education, health and agricultural development. We will continue to work diligently in 2013 to ensure that our efforts in these areas are carried forward to full fruition in fulfillment of our promise of better public services and improved living conditions for all Nigerian”, the President noted.

Nigeria president compares unrest in nation to Syrian civil war and wonders about ‘end times’

Nigeria’s president has compared the violence by an Islamist extremist sect in his West African nation to the ongoing civil war in Syria.
President Goodluck Jonathan made the comments Sunday before a church in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.
Jonathan said the sect known as Boko Haram “is taking over Abuja (and wants) for me and those working in government to run and hide somewhere else.”
Jonathan also told worshippers at the church that the violence around the world made him wonder if this is a “way of telling us that the end times are so close.”
According to an Associated Press count, Boko Haram has killed more than 780 people this year alone in Nigeria. The killings continue despite soldiers and police flooding the nation’s north.

Boko Haram Suspects Kill 15 Christians By Slitting Their Throats In Borno

Suspected Boko Haram members on Sunday killed 15 Christians by slitting their throats in Chibok, Borno state.

According to Mohammed Kana, a regional official for the National Emergency Management Agency, gunmen entered a church in Chibok and killed at least 15 worshipers.

“Some of the people had their throats slit,” Kana said, citing NEMA staff who responded to the scene.

According to a relief officer, the attackers killed the victims in their homes.

“From the information we gathered, the attackers broke into selected homes and slaughtered 15 people in their sleep,” the relief official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly.

Nigerian authorities tend to under-report death tolls however, and the relief official’s information matched up with that of residents, who spoke of 15 people having their throats slit.

Speaking of the victims, the relief official said “they included one traffic warden and 14 civilians. The victims were selected because they were all Christians, some of whom had moved into the neighbourhood from other parts of the city hit by Boko Haram attacks.”

Residents said they suspected the attackers were from Boko Haram.

“The attackers came in and silently went into homes whose residents were all Christians and slit the throats of their victims. They killed 15 people,” one resident said.

Sunday’s violence comes six days after attackers raided two churches during Christmas Eve services, killing 12 people.

Participants Flay Calabar Festival’s Nude Show ... LEADERSHIP NEWSPAPERS

Participants Flay Calabar Festival’s Nude Show

Some tourists and residents have condemned the ‘distasteful’ appearances of some of the female participants at the just-concluded Calabar Carnival.
Some spectators at the grand finale of the carnival, held on December 27, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that they were dismayed by the nude display by ladies during the event.
A US-based Nigerian, Mr Ikpafak Udofia, expressed displeasure at the costumes and the dress code of the girls on parade, asking ``is it modernisation or madness? I love my culture and I love my people but such nudity in the name of cultural exposition or whatever they called it is ridiculous.
``For women to walk on the streets almost naked in the name of carnival, is dishonourable to me, to my mother and wife and I wonder what the designers of those costumes were thinking,’’ he said.
Another US-based Nigerian Miss Gloria Ekong, however, called for caution in condemning the carnival attires. Ekong said: ``whether these girls have a secret agenda or not; their intention is to have fun with creative costumes. Trust me they don’t have to be in that attire to carry out their `secret agenda’. ``I personally wish that l have a killer body like that. We can be too judgmental under the guise of religion.’’ Another Nigerian in the Diaspora, Mrs Rosie Udo, said that there was nothing untoward in the appearance of the maidens’ attires. `` If these were men with extended belly, skinning legs, flat butt with skimpy wrappers, will that be honourable? Today’s African men are so disgusted with women and their bodies.”
Another Nigerian, Mr Chris Udoh, based in Port Harcourt said: `` as a man, I will not lose sleep if a woman decides on her own to walk naked in the streets. It is a good saving for a man because what he would have paid money or begged to view is given out by the owner free-of-charge. Walking naked is part of ‘uncommon transformation’ of the African women to their ancestral days when men used to live in caves.
``The truth is that African women who walk naked on the streets are cheapening their natural worth and beauties. Though it can buy short term attention but what happens thereafter becomes a burden to the seller only,’’ he said.

PRESS STATEMENT BY C.A.N PRESIDENT, PST AYO ORITSEJAFOR RESPONDING TO SEN BUKAR ABBA IBRAHIM ON BOKO HARAM.

PRESS STATEMENT BY C.A.N PRESIDENT, PST AYO ORITSEJAFOR RESPONDING TO SEN BUKAR ABBA IBRAHIM ON BOKO HARAM.

The President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, notes with concern, the statement credited to Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, who was twice governor of Yobe State, that government must dialogue with the Boko Haram sect, while also insisting that the reason for the action of the sect is inequality, neglect and injustice.
“Pastor Oritsejafor believes that the statement by the Senator that ‘we can find a way really to help dialogue with this group; after all, they are all Nigerians at least as far as we know…’ is overly reckless, irresponsible and insensitive, just as it is a panacea for encouraging  the increasingly violent and daring sect.
“In the first place, he says, it is naïve for Senator Ibrahim to reason that if the Federal Government dialogue with Boko Haram, the sect would limit itself to concessions made when they have stated, clearly, that their aim is to do away with western education and enthrone the Islamic law of Sharia’ah.
“The President of CAN advises Ibrahim not to panic into making recommendations that are short-sighted and that as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he should not take counsel from only a section of a state or region.
“He expects Senator Ibrahim to help put the sect in strict subjection to the laws of the land, rather than treading the dangerous path of dialogue, which has always been truncated by harsh conditions from the sect members,” the statement read.
The CAN president said as two times governor of Yobe state, the likes of Ibrahim should be held responsible for the poverty ravaging the North and indeed the country today.
“If today, the people are fighting biting poverty, inequality and injustice as Senator Ibrahim would want us to believe, it is his likes that should be held responsible for being the sources of their poverty.
“In that case, Boko Haram’s anger should have been directed at leaders like Senator Abba Bukar Ibrahim who have not allowed their members to take full advantages of the vast economic opportunities that exist in Northern Nigeria”,

Kogi Governor Idris Wada
Dr. Felix Ogedegbe of the CedarCrest Hospital, Abuja, who is treating the governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, for injuries sustained in an autocrash on Friday has confirmed that he is in a stable condition after a successful surgery on his broken thigh bone.
According to the doctor, “When the governor was brought in at 8pm, we were told he was involved in a car accident. We checked him and explained the nature of his injuries to him. We also told him about our ability to manage his injuries. He had a broken thigh and he was taken to the theatre. The governor has since stabilised and he had a nice night. He said he does not want to be taken abroad for treatment because he has confidence in our capacity to manage him. There is no immediate need to fly him abroad.”
The special adviser to the governor on media, Jacob Edi told newsmen that the news conference was necessary to dispel rumours over the health of the governor.
He said, “The governor’s driver is alive and in stable condition. The governor is in a stable condition. I was at the hospital with him throughout the night and we shook hands this (Saturday) morning. He insisted that he would not like to be flown abroad for treatment because he believes in the competence of Nigerian doctors.”
The governor’s Aide-de-camp, Mohammed Idris, who died in the accident, has been buried in his hometown, Zaria, Kaduna State on Saturday.
The state health commissioner, Dr. Omede Idris said, “The governor is doing very fine; I am not yet in Abuja but he is in a good state. He had his surgery yesterday (Friday) and he never lost consciousness for one second. He is talking to people. I have spoken with him and we are going to his ADC’s burial.”
Sources, however, say the family of Governor Wada prefer he is flown abroad for treatment believing he would be better taken care of.
The source also said that they reckon that taking him abroad will shield him from sympathizers and give him ample space to recuperate.
According to the source: “The family feels the governor will get better treatment abroad since they can afford it.”

The 2012 edition of one of Africa's biggest street carnivals, the Calabar International Carnival, lived up to expectations as it attracted more foreign tourists who visited Calabar for the carnival.
It is gradually matching up to the standard big carnivals like the Nottinghill Carnival in the UK and the Rio Carnival in Brazil have set.

Even with absence of the ailing governor of the state, Liyel Imoke, the carnival didn't fail to hold as the atmosphere around the streets of Calabar was lively. Top Africa's pay-TV provider, DSTV did a live broadcast of the event. Both local and international media had their reporters covering the carnival.

Brazilian Sampa performed on the stage right before the performance of TRINADAD AND TOBAGO who used drums and acoustics to play many local tunes.

2012 CALABAR INTERNATIONA CARNIVAL is great fun filled event that truly worths all the troubles and roads closed to allow the processions of the entertainers. The carnival was started by Donald Duke, governor of the state between 1999-2007.
