Simple, suave and unassuming, Alhaji
Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, the Kaduna State Governor-in-waiting, was a
Commissioner of Finance in Kaduna state before the death of President
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in May 2010. Indeed, Alhaji Mukhtar has enjoyed a
meteoric rise to political prominence in a state that many believe is
the socio-political nerve-centre of Nigeria.
When the then Kaduna State Governor, Mohammed Namadi Sambo was picked by
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the Vice President, the late
Patrick Yakowa moved up the ladder to occupy Kaduna’s hot seat. Yakowa
afterwards he picked Yero as the Deputy Governor. Thus, marked the
beginning of the 44-year-old accountant’s spectacular journey to
becoming the eighth civilian governor of Kaduna State.
Born May 1, 1968 in Zaria, Alhaji
Mukhtar Yero, had his primary school education at LEA Kaura in Zaria
City between 1974 to 1980 and went to Government Secondary School, Ikara
from 1980 to 1985. He completed his secondary school education at
Government Day Secondary School, Zaria in 1986.
In his pursuit for higher education,
Yero went to Institute of Administration, ABU, Zaria from 1986 to 1991
where he bagged his bachelor of science degree (BSC) in Accountancy. He
had his Masters degree MBA also at the same institution in 2003.
Alhaji Mukhtar did his mandatory one
year National Youth Service at Bulk Purchasing Corporation, Ibara,
Abeokuta, Ogun State in 1991. He started his working career at the
bursary department of ABU, Zaria in 1992.
In 1993, he joined the defunct Nigeria
Universal Bank Limited and left it in 1997 to pick up appointment at
Nalado Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Vice President Mohammed
Namadi Sambo as chief accountant. He rose to become the Director of
Finance and Administration in the organisation, a position he was
holding till his appointment as Commissioner of Finance in 2007.
Alhaji Mukhtar’s down-to-earth simplicity has endeared him to many in and outside Kaduna State.
