A four month pregnant housewife, identified as Njideka, from Okigwe
local government area of Imo State, narrowly escaped death from her
husband, Kingdom Ike, when he allegedly ran her over with his tricycle
for prying into his amorous relationship with his mistress.
An eyewitness, Mr Robinson Akunesi said that trouble started when the
wife who was returning from her village to Umuahum , Ndegwu, ran into
her husband and his mistress in the matrimonial home as they were
kissing and cuddling and was about to leave their home after an alleged
round of illicit affair.
“but before the wife could open her mouth to inquire what he was
doing with his mistress in their matrimonial home, he jumped on his
tricycle, which he used for commercial purposes, and ran her over,” he
said.
The eyewitness further alleged that it only took the grace of God to
save the pregnant woman, who was hooked to the side of the tricycle and
was dragged along for few kilometres before she was rescued.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the pregnant woman was taken to a nearby
clinic by a good Samaritan for treatment of the injuries she sustained
during the incident.
Meanwhile, the husband was said to have fled with his mistress after the incident.

CAN A HUMAN BEIGN BE THIS INHUMAN 2? : Female Custom Officer Buried Alive with Her Daughter: The Man Who Did It Confesses

EmotionS ran high, yesterday, following the startling confession of
A 64-year‑old herbalist has confessed that he buried a 68-year‑old retired Customs officer and her 10-year‑old adopted daughter alive in a shallow grave behind his shrine in Ajuwon, Ogun State.
The retired Customs officer, one Mrs Angela Kerry, who resided at New Oko‑Oba area of Lagos, was unable to give birth and had in her search for possible solutionmet the suspect who confessed to have carried out series of rituals and also prepared concoctions for her but to no avail.
The disappointed Kerry was said to have demanded the refund of N9 million earlier collected from her by the herbalist last month, consequent upon which he invited her to his shrine at 9, Wadoye Street, Ajuwon to collect the money, but the herbalist had other plans.
Narrating how he buried both mother and child alive, the suspect who claimed to have three wives and five children said: “She provoked me to anger. I did what I did because I considered her an enemy who was out to kill me if I did not act fast.
“It all started five years ago when she was introduced to me by her friend, one Lizzy. She was attacked spiritually and I helped her out. She came again over a similar attack and I also prepared some concoction which saved her. She told me that her family members were after her and I said she needed to fortify herself.
“Three years ago, she revealed that she has not been able to give birth and had not been pregnant for one day. I told her it would be impossible since she had reached menopause but she objected, saying many prophets had told her God could do it.
“Along the line, she said she wanted to sell her property at Omole, that she wanted to travel abroad to be away from her family. After selling the property, I discovered so many pastors started coming around here to get a share from the money realised. In fact she told me that she had paid N15 million to some pastors already.
“Then I told myself that if I did not act fast, these people will collect everything from her. I had to tell her to bring N9 million to prepare some concoction for her pregnancy, even though I knew it was impossible for her to get pregnant.
“She gave me N9 million. But after nine months, she came back saying nothing happened and demanded a refund. That was where trouble started. I managed to pay her N 3.5 million and begged her to be patient for the balance.
“Then she charged into my temple one Friday demanding that she should be paid that day. I told her I won’t pay her and that if she had gone to the hospital and the treatment failed could she have demanded a refund. She threatened to deal with me if I did not pay her, saying she would show me she was in the force.
“I told myself that this is war because I remembered she once showed me a gun at her apartment. I knew it was not a mere threat because she said she would kill me and nothing would happen. That threat provoked me. I knew that when two people are fighting, the first to attack will emerge winner.
“So, I decided to act fast before she tarnished my image. I pacified her to come back next day for the money. When leaving, I told her not to come with the daughter.
“After she left, I told myself I needed to act fast. I went to a building at the back of my shrine where I dug a hole. I spread a mat on the hole and laid a white cloth on it, exactly the way it looks in my shrine.
“When she came next day, I told her to go inside the building that we needed to pray before we talk about the money. She asked if the prayer was for the pregnancy and I told her it was for fortification.
“I warned her not to take her daughter along but she refused. I did not argue any further because I did not want my plan to fail.
“On getting inside the building, I asked her to stand on the white cloth and immediately she did, she fell inside the hole and landed on her buttocks. All I heard when she fell was yeh! When she fell, I said I have seen the end of my enemy and I have gained victory.
“The daughter did not say a word. She just stood watching. I had to cover the hole with over 40 buckets of sand.
“After covering the hole, I asked myself what to do with the little girl. I left the room, locked it from outside. When I came back at about 6.30pm, I met her on the sand. I quickly removed my jacket and poured about 30 bucket of sand to cover her. Next day, I went to get two bricklayers to cement the place,” the herbalist said.
The police commissioner, who described the act as callous, explained that after committing the crime, the suspect took her Toyota Camry vehicle to a dealer’s workshop to sell.
But the bubble burst when the victim’s relatives reported at New Oko‑Oba Police Station that Mrs Kerry was missing.
The policemen, he said, traced the victim’s car to a dealer’s workshop where two persons were arrested, adding that their confessional statement led to the suspect’s arrest.
“We have been able to recover the decomposed bodies and the victim’s travelling bag containing her personal effects and that of her daughter from the shallow grave he buried them in,” Manko said.
UNDOING DONE DEALS .. WHO PAYS THE PRICE? : Airport Rehabilitation: Minister Orders FAAN to Terminate Unsatisfactory Contracts ... ThisDayLive

supervising Minister of Aviation, Dr. Samuel Ortom
- Justifies N174bn debt on airport projects
Chinedu Eze and Martha Momoh
The supervising Minister of Aviation, Dr. Samuel Ortom, yesterday ordered the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to terminate the contracts of some contractors handling the projects at various airports in the country whose work did not meet agreed specifications.
Ortom gave the directive when he inspected the ongoing projects at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, saying the government would not accept any job that did not meet international standards.
The minister also said the massive rehabilitation projects embarked upon by the federal government at the 22 airports in the country, including the five new terminals at the five major airports in the country, justified the N174 billion already incurred in the projects.
Among the facilities inspected were the new international terminal being constructed with the Chinese EXIM Bank's facility, the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON), the fire service department, the N7.1 billion power plant, the general aviation terminal, the new wings in the international terminal and other facilities.
The minister said he was satisfied with the level of work done at the moment and promised that all the projects would be completed to specification.
"I'm impressed with the level of work done thus far at the new international terminal in Lagos. As you are aware, we are constructing same terminal in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu. They are being financed with the $500 million Chinese EXIM Bank loan and the $100 million federal government counterpart funding.
“Work is going on progressively and I'm happy with the quality of work being done and we are confident the project will be delivered in two years as agreed in the contract terms. In fact the contractors said they might even be completed before two years," the minister said.
Ortom however, acknowledged the funding difficulty but assured Nigerians that the ministry of aviation would create additional funding streams, particularly stepping up the internally generated revenue profile of the agencies so the projects can be funded without relying on federal government's allocations alone.
"I want to assure Nigerians that the projects will be completed. The projects are part of the aviation master plan dully approved by the federal executive council. Every single project that was started in the remodelling plan in the phase one, two and three will be completed. It is a matter of stepping up our revenue generation. We have massive opportunities if we are able to close the gaps, we will generate enough internal revenue to fund our projects in addition with what the federal government gives us. I want to allay the fears of Nigerians that the projects will be completed,” he said.
On the debts, he said: "The debts and commitment are there but you can see the massive work going on in the aviation industry today. That justifies the N174 billion debts. Rome wasn't built in a day and there is no way we can generate this money within a week. However, we intend not to embark on new projects so we can concentrate our energies and ensure we complete the projects started by my predecessor," he indicated.
According him, the only areas that might need new contracts would have to be on safety and security if the need arises.
Reacting to the concerns on human capital development among the agencies, he said: "We have taken steps to address the matter of human capital development and we consider this very critical. We have new technologies and best practices coming up frequently and we need to match recent developments by building capacity for our staff.
“We need to upgrade our staff skill to meet new developments. Training is our priority and we will train our staff to meet professional expectations. We take safety and security seriously and we need well-trained staff to achieve safety and security. As an interim measure, I have directed the managing director of FAAN to engage the retired fire service staff on temporal basis to address the shortage of staff in the fire service department,” Ortom explained.
RADICAL ISLAM BOWS TO INTERNATIONAL OUTCRY : Sudan death row's Meriam Ibrahim released after international outcry Campaign triggered after woman imprisoned for marrying a Christian was sentenced to 100 lashes and hanging for apostasy ... TheGuardianUK

A Christian woman on death row in a Sudanese prison has been
released on the orders of a court in Khartoum following an international
outcry over her sentence and treatment.
Meriam Ibrahim, 27, had been sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery and to be hanged for apostasy after refusing to renounce her faith. Her case led to an international campaign, drawing in political and religious leaders, celebrities and human rights organisations.
Demands for her release accelerated after Ibrahim gave birth while shackled to the floor of her prison cell at Omdurman women's prison. Her newborn daughter, Maya, and her toddler son, Martin, were incarcerated with her.
"I'm so happy," Ibrahim's husband, Daniel Wani, a US citizen, told the Guardian by phone from Khartoum on Monday. He said his wife and their two children were in relatively good condition, and he hoped that the family would soon be able to start a new life in the US. Elshareef Mohammed, Ibrahim's lawyer, said that she was "fine and very happy" but had been taken to a safe house amid fears that the family could be at risk of attack.
The case against Ibrahim was triggered by allegations made by men claiming to be relatives, although Ibrahim denied knowing them.
The news of her release was broken by the Sudanese state news agency, Suna, which said: "The appeal court ordered the release of [Ibrahim] and the cancellation of the [earlier] court ruling." Judges had been hearing an appeal against Ibrahim's convictions for the past two weeks. Her lawyers argued that the case was based on weak and inconsistent claims and contravened Sudan's interim constitution.
Jehanne Henry, of Human Rights Watch, said: "Obviously this is good news and it shows that the appeals court sought to uphold rights. This is the outcome we were hoping for because there was a clear legal basis for releasing her." Ibrahim's conviction and sentences were "such a blatant disregard of fundamental human rights that it provoked quite an outcry", she said. "It's quite possible that international pressure had an influence."
There was no immediate response from the Foreign Office, which has been involved in lobbying Sudan's government. However, the Foreign Office's minister for Africa, Mark Simmons, said on Twitter: "Delighted by release of #MeriamIbrahim Important that government of #Sudan follows up to ensure freedom of religion is guaranteed for all."
In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf praised the decision to free Ibrahim and called on the government to "repeal the laws to help demonstrate to the Sudanese people that their government intends to respect their fundamental freedoms and universal human rights".
Ibrahim was convicted of apostasy after the court insisted she was a Muslim because her father was a Muslim, even though Ibrahim said she had been brought up as a Christian after her father abandoned the family when she was six. Following her conviction last month, she was given three days to renounce her faith or face a death sentence.
Then eight months pregnant, she was told that her death sentence would be deferred for two years to allow her to nurse her unborn baby.
The leaders of Britain's three political parties backed a campaign to get Ibrahim released. David Cameron said he was "absolutely appalled" by her sentence. "The way she is being treated is barbaric and has no place in today's world. Religious freedom is an absolute, fundamental human right," the prime minister said. The US state department said it was "deeply disturbed" by the case and called on Khartoum to respect the right to freedom of religion.
Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, Jesse Jackson and Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, were among high-profile international figures calling for the sentence to be dropped.
A demand by Amnesty International for Ibrahim's release won the support of more than 1 million people worldwide. Thousands rallied to a Twitter campaign, #SaveMeriam. The actor Mia Farrow urged her followers to "bombard" the Sudanese embassies in London and Washington with demands for Ibrahim's release, supplying the relevant phone numbers.
Sarah Jackson of Amnesty said : "Today's ruling is a small step to redressing the injustice done to Meriam. However, she should never have been prosecuted. Meriam was sentenced to death when eight months pregnant for something which should not be a crime. Furthermore, her abhorrent treatment, including being shackled, violated international human rights law against ill-treatment."
Amnesty urged the Sudanese authorities to repeal provisions that criminalise acts of apostasy and adultery, and to establish a moratorium on executions as a first step towards abolishing the death penalty.
The US government is now likely to come under pressure to allow Ibrahim to settle in the US by granting asylum or citizenship on the basis of her marriage. Ibrahim and Wani were married in a Khartoum church in December 2011.
Under Sudanese law, it is forbidden for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man. However, Ibrahim claimed in court that she had been brought up as a Christian by her mother after her Muslim father left the family.
She had attended church regularly. Wani – who is originally from South Sudan – said that she was more committed to her faith than he was.
A statement signed by Father Mussa Timothy Kacho, episcopal vicar for Khartoum, said Ibrahim had "never been a Muslim in her life".
The couple had business interests in Khartoum including a hair salon, a mini-mart and agricultural land.
In 2013, a man who claimed to be Ibrahim's brother alerted the Sudanese authorities to what he believed was an unlawful union.
In May, the court declared the marriage invalid, and Ibrahim guilty of adultery. She was sentenced to a public whipping, and to be hanged for apostasy.
Ibrahim was held in what human rights organisations described as atrocious conditions with limited access to medical care and legal representation. Wani was permitted only brief visits to his family. He said his wife and children were being held in inhumane conditions.
Hopes for Ibrahim's release were raised three weeks ago when a Sudanese foreign ministry official said she would be freed imminently. The Sudanese government swiftly issued a statement saying Ibrahim could only be freed on a court order, not as a political decision.

UNRAVELLING THE FACE BEHIND THE KANO BOMB ATTACK : Kano School Of Hygiene Attack: Bomber Disguises As Fresh Student ... LeadershipNews

A suicide bomber yesterday disguised as a fresh student of the Kano School of Hygiene, along Sabuwar-Kofa, Kano State, had attempted to blow up the school.
The bomber, according to eye-witnesses, drove into the premises of the school, parked his car and pretended to make enquiries about the registration process.
Shortly after alighting from the vehicle, the bomb inside the car exploded, killing 8 persons and injuring over 20 others. LEADERSHIP learnt that five of the dead were students of the school.
According to a guard at the school who witnessed the incident, the school had a busy week because of the newly admitted students that were registering for their first session in the school. The blast occurred as the students were struggling to meet a deadline to register for the new academic session.
“The bomber came in blue traditional attire; he drove in and asked about a department, so we all assumed he is a fresh student. He was even holding some school registration papers with him.
“We allowed him in and I told him where to park because we were having parking space problem because of the fresh students around.
“So it was strange when he went the other way, so I followed him and instructed he park at the appropriate place, we argued for a while before he agreed to park where he was instructed to.
“A few minutes after he parked the car, the bomb went off, by that time we had seen his face and could identify him. So when he hurried to the gate, we ran after him and pinned him down, he was also carrying some devices on him but we were brave enough to take him down,” the guard who craved anonymity said.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the bomber was nearly lynched by some irate students, but some teachers and school officials rescued him and took him away and locked him up before police operatives came and whisked him away.
An eyewitness, who is also a student, told our reporter that there was a white vehicle parked in the midst of the school for hours and it was the same vehicle that exploded and killed students.
He said he heard loud explosion while he was standing with colleagues at the other end, adding that he later saw pieces of human parts scattered all over the place.
Nura Ado Bello who said to be an in-law to the provost of the school, said he was at the school to see the provost and get some financial support.
Nura, whom our reporter met at Murtala Muhammad Hospital and who sustained burn injuries, told LEADERSHIP that he just heard a loud explosion and lost consciousness, saying he only found himself with burn injuries at hospital.
Another victim at the emergency ward of the same hospital, Abdulrazak Allai Rano of Ringim town in Jigawa state said he was at the school to be screened and collect admission letter which he had been following for the past four weeks.
Abdulrazak, who sustained various degrees of burn injuries, said he lost all his original school documents that he was holding before the blast.
Our reporter saw a young student in his school uniform who lost concioussness and hours after the blast could not regain his consciousness. He was seen making some moves with his two hands as if he was trying to prevent something from touching his face.
LEADERSHIP also talked to the provost of the school, Malam Ado Bello who said that as he parked his vehicle under the shed meant for him and was about to come out of the vehicle, he heard a loud explosion a few metres from his position.
“I was lucky to have survived the incidence”, said the provost of the school.
He added that in just few moments all one could see were dead bodies lying down, with several other students injured and helpless.
Kano State police command commissioner of police, Mr Aderenle Shinaba confirmed the attack and the number of casualties. He said the area had been cordoned off and emergency services were continuing to take the injured to hospital.
The federal government also confirmed the attack in Kano but noted that the bomb was planted within the school compound.
Coordinator of the National Briefing Centre on the efforts to end insurgency and bring back the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, Mr Mike Omeri who confirmed the incident said the explosion rocked the Kano Municipal City area of Sabo Kafar at 2.05pm.
Omeri who reacted to a question on the continued detention of the arrested 486 northern indigenes in Abia said findings from the investigation on the suspected travellers would shock most Nigerians.
According to him, Nigerians who call on security operatives to release the suspects should exercise restraint, saying that the security agencies should be allowed to do their job.
Omeri also confirmed the arrest of kidnappers who had been making life unbearable for Abuja residents. He called on the members of the public, particularly young girls to take precautionary measures towards averting being kidnapped as kidnappers are known to target female folks more than the males.
Omeri revealed that over the weekend, security operatives killed a notorious terrorist, Mallam Husaini, who he said, led a terrorist cell billed to operate in Plateau state in an encounter between his group and a military convoy along Jos – Bauchi high way. Husaini was said to have led the attack on Police Anti-Robbery squad in Abuja in November, 2012 and a military convoy along the Lokoja – Kaduna highway where two soldiers were killed in January, 2013.

Also speaking to our reporter, the sister of one of the youths killed, Fecit Miri cried out to the Federal Government, and relevant authorities and indeed all well-meaning Nigerians to ensure that this act carried out on innocent youths would not go unpunished.
A residence of the Bukuru low-coast Rintim described the incident that happen at the bar as pathetic, calling on the Chief of Army staff and commander of the STF to investigate the matter and ensure that the culprits were brought to book.
Efforts to reach the spokesman of the Special Task Force, Captain Iweha, before sending this report was abortive as he was not picking his calls.
Besides, the Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, Abuh Emmanuel said they had not received an Official report from the Divisional Police officer in Bukuru , but they would investigate and get to the root of the matter.
