TRANSFORMING NIGERIA IN EVERY WAY ... JONATHAN IS DOING IT : Nigeria is now world refugee capital with 10% of all internally displaced people ... NigerianWatch

NIGERIA now has the highest number of internally displaced persons in the world as the staggering 3.3m refugees created by the Boko Haram crisis in the northeast accounts for 10% of the global total.

According to figures just released by the Norwegian Refugee Council and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, there are 33m internally displaced people worldwide. Nigerians now accounting for the largest single chunk of the figure and a joint report published by both bodies  described the situation as worrisome and requiring urgent attention.

They blamed the crisis on the deteriorating state of insecurity and humanitarian crisis in Nigeria, caused by the failure of leadership and the abuse of the country's politics. Over the weekend,  a campaign group called Nigeria Unite held a briefing in New York with the theme, Nigeria, A Country In Crisis, where it published the report.

In a statement signed by Reverend Peter Ichull, Olarewaju Suraju, Mariya Ibrahim Baba and Gloria Kilanko, the group said: “Firstly, the enormous humanitarian crisis of internally displaced persons and other victims of the violent insurgency in NIGERIA need international support and assistance. According to the 2014 report of the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre and the Norwegian Refugee Council, out of the 33m internally displaced persons all over the world, Nigeria accounts for 3.3m or a whopping 10% of the total as at May this year.

"This situation is entirely as a result of the activities of the three versions of Boko Haram. Since May, the situation had deteriorated precipitously with hundreds of thousands more refugees wandering into the neighbouring countries of NIGER, Cameroon and Chad."

According to the group, the matter could worsen NEXT year if the 2015 elections are not free, fair and credible. It noted that Nigerians were increasingly being militarised and divided along ethnic, religious and sectional lines and carpeted the current leadership in the country for lacking the capacity, morality, sincerity and political will to investigate and prosecute the alleged sponsors of Boko Haram.
