The Oyo State correspondent of ThisDay Newspapers, Tunde Sanni, is dead.
Mr. Sanni, who died on Thursday at Ijebu Imodi, Ogun State, after a protracted illness, was aged 49 years.
He was buried in the town according to Islamic rites same day.
The deceased, the immediate past chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), took ill four months ago and was hospitalized at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan where he spent about one month.
After discharge, he returned to his home town of Ijebu Imodi where he spent his last days.
Mr. Sanni started his journalism career in the mid-80s. He worked at the rested Sketch newspaper and Punch newspapers before joining ThisDay.
He was a correspondent for ThisDay in Kwara and Kogi states before he was posted to Ibadan to report from Oyo State in 2007.
He is survived by his wife and eight children.
The Correspondents’ Chapel, in a statement by its chairperson, Bisi Oladele, described Mr. Sanni’s death as a great loss to the pen profession at large and Oyo State.
“As colleagues, we will miss Tunde Sanni’s deep political and news analyses, friendship and his sense of humour,” the statement reads.
The chapel prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest.
The NUJ in the state, in a statement by the chairman, Gbenga Opadotun, also lamented the passage of the veteran reporter, saying his multiple roles in the union would be missed.
Also in another statement, the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, commiserated with the family of Mr. Sanni, describing his death as highly unfortunate and disheartening.
The governor, in a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday by his Special Adviser, Festus Adedayo, said that he received the news of Mr. Sanni’s death with shock and disbelief.
He described the late journalist as a core professional, with high sense of responsibility and commitment; adding that he would be remembered for upholding the ethics of the journalism profession and for his analytical mind which reflected in his various write-ups.
While condoling with the family, friends, professional colleagues and the NUJ on the journalist’s demise, Mr. Ajimobi prayed that Allah grants his soul eternal rest.
