A gang of suspected assailants on Wednesday shot dead a senior
lecturer with Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State.
AfricanOutlook gathered that the university teacher Dr Segun Onabanjo
of Department of Sociology met his death when the gunmen stormed his
private residence. His death came barely 24-hours after the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called off its six-months old strike.
It was learnt that, the suspected killers stormed the residence located
in Odomolasa area of Ilese-Ijebu at about 1.00am and attempted to force
their way into his apartment.
The gunmen were reported to have made frantic efforts to burst into
the apartment, while our sources informed that in the course of that the
lecturer was heard shouting "e bami gbe ibon mi (kindly bring me my
gun)" to his kids and relatives in an apparent attempt to scare away the
armed men. However, the gunmen forced their way into the house and
rained bullets on the victim who died instantly and the attackers
thereafter carted away some personal and household items. The corpse of
the lecturer had been deposited at the mortuary as at the time of this
report.
When contacted on telephone, Ogun State Police Command Public Relations
Officer, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the killing of the varsity
lecturer. Adejobi however, assured that the command was on the trail of
the suspected killers who escaped through a nearby bush assuring that
the command would do everything possible to bring them to justice.
The police image maker further told our correspondent that a team of
policemen stormed the area immediately the incident happened and engaged
the gunmen in a shootout, adding that some of the suspects sustained
injuries during the gun duel. He urged members of the public to promptly
report anybody found with bullet wounds to security agents.
Hear him "The incident was quite unfortunate. The police command is
seriously investigating this case and the suspects would be brought to
justice. We are already working on some leads; the police combed the
area and found blood stains at the back of the house of the lecturer.
The police traced the blood and hopefully, it will help in this case."
He appealed to residents to be careful in handling such a crime
situation, saying they should be wary of showing off even if they have
firearms, just as he called on medical doctors in the state to alert the
command in case they notice anyone with gun shot wounds in their
hospitals.
