A 25-year-old Patrick Onyeka, who allegedly strangled his neighbour’s
eight-year-old son to death in Ikotun area of Lagos State, was on
Thursday, remanded in prison by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, of the Ikeja
High Court after he was arraigned for the offence by the state’s
Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
Onyeka, is facing a one-count charge of murder.
The state prosecutor, Mr Akin George, alleged that the accused
murdered the child, Ayuba Erikotola, on January 12, 2013 at his
residence.
George
said Onyeka lured the deceased into the compound, strangled him to
death and kept the corpse in a sack inside a soak-away within the
estate.
Onyeka was also alleged to have, thereafter, demanded a ransom of N5
million from the boy’s parents before he was arrested by the police.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
Onyeka pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Following the arraignment, George urged the court to grant the matter
an accelerated hearing due to the public interest it had generated.
He said the prosecution had nine witnesses to testify against the accused.
The judge acceded to his request and consequently adjourned the matter to June 25, 26 and 27 for trial.
