The Benue governor, Gabriel Suswam, has
formally announced that he is no longer a part of the Northern States
Governors Forum (NSGF).
His decision is a fall-out from the
acrimonious Nigeria Governors’ Forum election last month in which
despite the fact that Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers won, a faction loyal
to Aso Rock continues to throw its weight behing Gov. Jonah Jang of
Plateau. Suswam is a part of that faction.
Addressing a press conference in
Makurdi, Suswam said there is no longer unity in the forum as governors
no longer trust each other. He said he therefore decided to take the
path taken by Gov. Isa Yuguda of bauchi, who also quit the forum.
Suswam said he was disgusted by the
betrayal of some of his colleagues from the North who consensually
adopted Jang and then went behind to betray the Plateau governor.
“The northern governors’ forum is
polarized because it is no longer conducive for us to sit as one in such
meeting where a collective decision is taken and some people go out to
do something else. We no longer trust ourselves,” Suswam stressed.
On the NGF crisis, he pledged his
continuous support for Gov. Jonah Jang saying that anyone else parading
himself as the chairman of the forum is deceiving himself.
