The 41-year-old actor, best known for his role as Michael Schofield in TV hit Prison Break, made the admission after he was sent an invitation to attend the St Petersburg International film festival.
Gay rights group GLAAD have published his reply to the invitation online.
He wrote: “As a gay man, I must decline.
“I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”
The actor went on to deem the treatment of the gay community in Russia as ‘unacceptable’.

Wentworth’s decision to come out and make a stand against the country’s anti-gay stance was quickly praised by Wilson Cruz, spokesperson of GLAAD.

He said: “Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone.
“As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia's horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia's anti-LGBT law.”
