The Northern Governors’ Wives Forum has said that it has done a great deal of work in touching the lives of the people of the Northern region.
The forum said this during its valedictory session in Abuja yesterday to dissolve its executive council and also hand over the forum to those who will remain in office beyond May 29, 2015.
Presiding over the meeting for the last time, the outgoing chairperson of the forum and wife of Benue State governor, Arc Yemisi Dooshima Suswam, said she was leaving behind a good and well-rounded legacy for the forum and the people of Benue.
Reeling out some of the achievements during her three years and three months tenure, she said she and her executive members put in their best given the circumstances in which they found themselves.
She said child education was on the forum’s front burner, using the child-rights activist, Malala Yousouf’s example as a guide to children’s rights to education in the Northern region.
The Benue State governor’s wife, who said they advocated peace in the different states of the North, using various media platforms, added that the forum embarked on consistent prayers and fasting for peaceful co-existence of Nigerians.
She congratulated those who won elections, including General Muhammadu Buhari, and President Goodluck Jonathan for his sportsmanship.
She tasked the incoming members to take advantage of the platform so that they can be the voice of the Northern woman, the Northern youths and the Northern child, to ensure that they have healthy and productive lives, empowered and prepared to contribute their quota to the growth of their country economically and otherwise.
Speaking on the ongoing rescue of women and children from Sambisa Forest by the military, Mrs Suswam said, “We need to give them succour first and foremost. We need to be part of their recovery process because they must have been battered and traumatised.”
“For them not to die in bitterness of that effect, we need to talk them out of it; we need to show them love; we need to make sure that nobody discriminates against them and everyone should be a part of this process so that they are integrated back into the society.”
She encouraged the interim members, incoming executives and members to carry on with the lofty ideas and programmes of the non- political, non-religious, non-ethnic forum where Northern interests are projected.
