Notorious drug baron and Senator-Elect for Ogun State Buruji Kashamu told SaharaTV correspondent Adeola Fayehun that stepping in the United States is like asking him “to jump into the fire.” Mr. Kashamu told Adeola Fayehun that he was incensed by his treatment on the SaharaTV and SaharaReporters platforms and the constant reporting regarding his drug trafficking offenses in the United States in the 1990s.
Mr. Kashamu is currently wanted by the United States for trafficking millions of dollars in heroine from Europe and Southeast Asia through Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Authorities in the United Kingdom arrested Mr. Kashamu, and detained him for four years, before eventually releasing him.
Mr. Kashamu has vehemently denied being wanted by the United States today, however research carried out by SaharaReporters and SaharaTV correspondent Adeola Fayehun shows that the US Attorney General’s Office in Chicago are demanding his extradition for these drug charges. The Senator-Elect’s response to this evidence is that the German authorities exonerated him, despite the fact that German courts do not have jurisdiction in other sovereign countries.
“I have done a lot of things to clear my name. I spent four years in detention at the hands of the US authorities to prove my innocence before I was eventually exonerated. This was also in the presence of the US prosecutors and other agencies in various countries, like the Republic of Benin, Nigeria,” he said.
Mr. Kashamu has emphatically stated that the US government has mistaken his identity for that of his brother, who is also alleged to have trafficked narcotics during the same time. The Senator-Elect claimed that reports of his brother’s death were false and that “everybody knows him. He was living in Cotounou. He was moving around.”
“You’ve seen a lot of people that the U.S has arrested because of a mistaken of identity, who have been involved in many things and have been arrested but at the end of the day, they will find out they knew nothing about this case,” Mr. Kashamu added.
It is said that Buruji Kashamu inspired the memoir and Netflix series hit “Orange is the New Black” when he was arrested in the 1990s for drug trafficking. Mr. Kashamu also claims to have been a US government informant who provided information to the US authorities on the impending 9/11 terrorist attacks before they happened.
