There was a fresh attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on farmers in Guma local government area of Benue State and five persons were allegedly killed, market and several houses were also burnt.
LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that the ugly incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when the invaders stormed the Aku village, killed and totally razed the market while scores were said to have sustained injuries.
However, eye witness said the Fulani attackers who, according to sources, emerged from a border community on the bank of River Benue, located at the boundary between Benue and Nasarawa States would shoot sporadically in the air before killing persons and burning homes. It was gathered that the Fulani invaders after injuring others and destroying properties then moved to the market and stampeded the market women and artisans for several hours before finally leaving.
The security operatives who were on surveillance in the affected communities, it was learnt arrived late at the scene after the herdsmen had already unleashed mayhem on the peasant farmers.
Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) DSP Daniel Ezeala, who confirmed the incident to newsmen yesterday, in Makurdi however, said the command is yet to ascertain the number of deaths but added that security has been beefed up in the affected area to prevent further attacks.
