The AP is reporting that suspected Islamic militants gunned down 44 people praying at a mosque in Konduga town, outside Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state. This is the largest massacre in the north east of the country since the state of emergency was declared by President Jonathan in May 2013.
The massacre occurred on Sunday evening.
The AP report quoted a state security service agent and a member of a civilian vigilante group working with the military who both said that they counted the bodies at the mosque after the attack. 4 members of the civilian vigilante group were also killed after they responded to calls for help.
According to reports, the Boko Haram members dressed in military uniform, crept upon worshipping villagers in the mosque and shot dead at least 44 worshippers, injuring 26.
A House of Assembly member representing Konduga in the State Assembly, Ali Dalori, has also confirmed the attack to journalists, but declined giving details of the casualty.
