Boko Haram insurgents have suffered a setback as two of their commanders and 15 of their fighters were killed Tuesday morning as fighting between them and Nigerian troops to recapture Michika and Bazza towns raged.
The towns were overran by the insurgents over a week ago.
A military source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that two dreaded commanders of the sect reportedly in charge of Gulak and Shuwa, were among the dead after a fierce battle between the two sides in Bazza.
Meanwhile, bodies of indigenes caught in the crossfire are reportedly littering the town following renewed fighting between Nigerian troops and the insurgents.
‘Insurgents Still Slaughtering People, Raping Women In Michika’
More than a week after Boko Haram annexed Michika and Bazza towns in Adamawa State, residents say the two towns are yet to be recaptured by the Nigerian soldiers as widely speculated.
The residents said the insurgents maintained their siege on the two towns as they continued slaughtering people and raping women trapped in the towns while plundering properties.
The disclosure was made in Yola yesterday by a coalition of non governmental organisation consisting of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Michika chapter, Civil Servants Forum, the Northern Christian Elders Forum and Kamwe Christian Community Forum.
According to the spokesperson of the forum, Rev. Joel Billi, who doubles as the chairman of CAN, Michika branch, the insinuation that the military has recaptured Michika and Bazza towns were blatant lies as the insurgents are still in control of the two towns.
Senate To FG: Declare Total War On Boko Haram
……Refers Jonathan’s $1bn Loan Request To Committee
Against the backdrop of increasing activities of the insurgent group Boko Haram, which has resulted in the sect taking over some towns in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno, the Senate has urged the federal government to declare total war on the sect
The Upper House also referred President Goodluck Jonathan’s $1B loan external borrowing request to tackle ongoing security challenges in Nigeria to the Committee on Finance for further legislative action.
The report of the committee is expected after one week.
The Senate also mandated the leadership of the Senate, chairmen of relevant committees and senators of the affected states to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan and the various heads of the security agencies on steps taken so far and further steps to address the situation and report back to the Senate .
These resolutions were sequel to the motion sponsored by Senate leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba and 107 senators, titled, “Threat to National Sovereignty and Territorial integrity of Nigeria by insurgents”.
Reps In Secret Session, Report Conspiracy, Sabotage In Boko Haram Fight
Federal lawmakers yesterday reported a “humanitarian crisis” in the insurgency-wracked North East of Nigeria, just as they alleged conspiracy and sabotage in the fight against Boko Haram in that area.
To this end, the House of Representatives resolved to review legislative inhibitions militating against foreign military support in Nigeria’s fight against insurgents.
Moving a motion under matters of urgent public importance, Hon. Tahir Muhammad Monguno expressed concern on what he termed, “the dangerous territorial push by terrorists”.
Monguno reported that insurgents have now captured and are in control of 7 local governments in Borno, 2 in Yobe and 2 in Adamawa; totaling 11 local government areas in the three affected states.
He said many security formations in the affected areas have been over ran, thereby enabling Boko Haram to declare a caliphate and hoist their flags.
“The declaration of a caliphate means those areas are no longer under the sovereignty of Nigeria. Mr. Speaker, this is a serious threat to the territorial integrity of Nigeria. The same territorial integrity we all swore here to protect”, Monguno reported.
