A 500-level student of Federal University of Technology, Minna,
Godwin Lawani Idoko, has appeared before a Minna Chief Magistrate Court,
for allegedly beheading his girlfriend, Ramatu Isa, on January 1, 2013,
for refusing him sex.
According to the charge sheet read by Chief Magistrate Moh’d Gimba
Gabi, the accused was said to have committed culpable homicide offence
punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code.
Idoko was alleged to have beheaded his victim for refusing him sex
after he had paid Ramatu, who sold groundnut, an agreed fee of N2000.
The father of the victim, Mohammed Isa, reported the killing of Ramatu at Bosso Police Station.
Idoko’s neighbors had earlier called the attention of a police patrol
team to his strange movements, which later led to the discovery of the
headless body of Ramatu in his Rafin Yasin residence.
When asked if is guilty of the charge, Idoko refused to take a plea,
but demanded for the interpretation of Section 221, a development which
forced the trial judge to explain that the offence carries a death
penalty if an accused person is found guilty.
After the explanation by the judge, Idoko told the court that he
didn’t behead the victim, saying he merely stabbed her on the neck.
‘’I did not behead the lady. I only stab her on the neck when she
refused to agree to my demand for sex after she has collected the N2000
we agreed.
‘’Instead of allowing me to make love, she forcefully held and
squeezed my manhood and bit me on my palm before I stabbed her on the
neck. It was at the Bosso Police Station that I was told she was
beheaded,’’ Idoko told the court.
He then refused to say anything further, demanding to see his lawyer and the neighbors who reported him to the police.
The prosecutor, Inspector John Atumeyi later told the court that the
matter is still being investigated, and prayed that the accused person
be remanded in prison.
The Chief Magistrate Gabi assured the accused of legal representation
in view of the enormity of the offence. He then adjourned the matter to
March 14, 2013 for further hearing, while giving orders that Idoko be
remanded in Minna Prison.
