The Daura Emirate Council in Katsina
State has announced the cancellation of the annual Maulud festival in
honour of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who was attacked by
gunmen on January 19.
The attack had left six people dead and others, including two of the emir’s sons, injured.
The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruk,
told a delegation from Baure Local Government, who visited his palace to
commiserate with him on the attack that the festival earlier slated to
begin today had been cancelled.
The event locally known as “Sallar
Gani’’ is part of the emirate’s festivals, during which indigenes of the
area return home from across the world to fraternise with loved ones.
The one week celebration involves the
traditional durbar, horse racing and other traditional sports and serves
as a period for the renewal of allegiance to the emir.
Faruk prayed for continued peace and security in the country and for the repose of the souls of those who died in the incident.
The emir also prayed for the quick
recovery to those injured in the attack and for God to give Bayero the
strength to wither the situation. (NAN)
