Last night, news broke that former member of the House of Representatives-turned-opposition-activist, Dino Melaye survived an assassination attempt while driving from a yet-to-be-disclosed location in his Bentley, somewhere in Abuja’s Central Business District.

Mr. Melaye, who is now the Executive Director of the Anti-Corruption Network, a movement he founded since leaving the House, has already reported the incident to the State Security Services. While our sympathies are with him over this strange event, we can’t avoid scratching our heads over some details that don’t quite fit.
1. Was the Bentley bullet proof or not?
- While his close associate, Ayobami Oyalowo and former FCT Minister, Nasir el-Rufai both tweeted that the car was bullet-proof, this report by Daily Post said it wasn’t. Some clarification is needed here.
2. Look mum, it’s a miracle
- The Daily Post reported the Director of Strategy and Planning of Mr. Melaye’s NGO, who was not named, as having said that the gunmen, about four or five of them, each shot twice at the ‘non-bulletproofed’ car, but the bullets did not penetrate. He described it as a miracle. On this point, we are in agreement – it is indeed a miracle, and one that many others world over would be wishing they had to survive shootings through car windscreens. It is still unclear how 8 to 10 bullets are fired at a windshield and car windows that are not bullet-proofed and not a single one penetrates.
3. Dumb and Dumber car jackers
- The Director of Strategy and Planning was also quoted as saying that the assassins tried jacking him down from the car. The question now arises: did they attempt to do that with the door closed and from the outside? Or was it open, but somehow, they did not succeed? If they were really bent on killing him, won’t they have continued shooting, or if the door was open, shoot straight at him since there is no miraculous bullet-stopping-but-not-bulletproofed glass in their way?
4. “It is a clear case of assassination. No one would want to steal a Bentley”
- The above quote comes from the unnamed Director of Mr. Melaye’s anti-corruption NGO. Curiously enough, he believes that his boss’s exotic car doesn’t make him a prime target for car thieves. This is very weird, not to mention convenient, logic.
5. Hurry up, it’s an assassination
- Police detectives (or the SSS, to whom, curiously enough, Dino Melaye reported the incident to) ought to be happy that he has reduced their work by already declaring it an assassination attempt. But how is he so sure – and why the haste? Considering the fact that the bullets didn’t get to him (which is a miracle we are thankful for), isn’t it possible they might have wanted his wallet, or even the car if the bullets got him? But, of course, no one steals a Bentley.
