The South East Social media Lobby group (SESMLG) announces the Findings of their visit/Inspection tour to Onitsha River Port and environs, a delegation of members led by Comrade Obioma Prince Ikem, visited the Port on the 10th 0f April 2014, while on the inspection tour, they have amongst other findings observed that everything is in place and there is hope for the eventual takeoff of operations of this all-important river Port, However members of SESML expressed hopes that the federal government can accelerate the process of getting this facility functional within the shortest possible time given appropriate political will and good intentions, their findings revealed that all Port equipment as reported are in great shape for the eventual takeoff of business activities, the downside the visiting team noticed is that there is other local business activities taking place there, this includes local selling of manually dredged sand, and repairs and maintenance of canoes/boats, they also noted that their is limited chances of expanding the Port facility if business activities picks up in the future as anticipated by the group.

Another likely problem members observed is the spate of insecurity along the rout to Onitsha Ports, members cannot immediately address these concerns.

SESMLG was worried that the federal government did not make any public assurances or refusal on their first press statement concerning the reactivation of the Onitsha Port.

After deliberations by group members the group leader Benjamin Amaechi thinks it is expedient to send a formal letter to the presidency on the status and some kind of assurances of re activating this all-important River Port in Onitsha within relevant time.

SESML is a non-partisan, non-religious lobby group with proclivity for attracting investments, infrastructures and vibrate the economy of the southeastern states in Particular and by extension Nigeria.

The drive to attract investment will include lobbying public, private and international organizations to Nigeria, SESMLG have pledged to take advantage of the current rebasing of Nigeria's GDP as Africa's largest economy, to better leverage that opportunity and attract the much needed investment to South Eastern Nigeria, no stone should be left un-turned to achieve this noble objectives for the south East and Nigeria.

Member's considers activating the strategic River port in Onitsha as one of the easiest goals for the federal government to engage in and achieve within the shortest possible time, group members have also assured that there are ready investors keen to invest in barges to take care of container trans-load from Sea to send containers to Onitsha from international vessels, this can only happen, they observed if Onitsha port is granted " Cargo destination "status by the federal government. Granting Onitsha status of “Cargo destination”
is one of the cardinal requests to be put forward to the president in a letter soon to be sent to the president.

The group reiterated their commitment in assurance of their support for the president if this singular request is granted them in good time before the politically active year 2015

The slogan "No Onitsha Port No Vote" will surely be rebased if a commitment is gotten at the earliest from the presidency " the group assured.

More news coming!!
