The Nigerian Army on Friday said it has recaptured four towns from Boko Haram insurgents operating in the area.
The towns include Bita, Izge, Yamteke and Uba in Askira Uba and Damboa Local Government Areas of Borno State.
Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said troops of 3 and 7 division of the Nigerian Army, supported by colleagues from the Air Force, liberated the towns from the insurgents on Thursday.
Mr. Usman, a colonel, said the operation was in continuation of the push by the Nigerian military to liberate Sambisa forest – a stronghold of the terrorists in Borno State.
While a soldier was lost and 10 others injured during the operation, the army spokesperson said many of the terrorists were killed and various weapons recovered from the locations.
Mr. Usman assured Nigerians that the Army will provide adequate security during the gubernatorial and state assembly elections on Saturday.
He said the Nigerian Army, working in collaboration with other security agencies, has directed all formations and units to remain vigilant and act within the law to prevent any attempt to endanger the lives of Nigerians anywhere in the country.
Mr. Sani said “The Nigerian Army wishes to assure Nigerians of its continued subordination to constituted civil authority and protection of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
He also called all Nigerian Army personnel on election duties to show professionalism by abiding to the confines of the Code of Conduct for military official on such duties.
“As the 2015 Gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections approaches, the Nigerian Army enjoins all Nigerians to remain law abiding and continue to discharge their civic obligations of voting for the candidates of their choice on Saturday, 11 April 2015, without any fear,” Mr. Usman said.
