President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed the former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Obi’s appointment was announced yesterday, and according to the presidency, his appointment takes immediate effect.
Jonathan also approved the confirmation of Mr Mounir Gwazo as the substantive director-general of the commission but the confirmation is subject to the approval of the National Assembly.
Gwarzo, who has been in acting capacity, was appointed to the board of the SEC as an executive commissioner in January, 2013. Obi, the immediate past governor of Anambra state, takes over from Dr Suleyman Ndanusa who was appointed the chairman of the commission in December 2012.
He was born on July 19, 1961, and attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating with a B.A (Hons) in Philosophy in 1984. Going into business, he became chairman of Next International Nigeria Ltd, then chairman and director of Guardian Express Mortgage Bank Ltd, Guardian Express Bank Plc, Future View Securities, among others.
