Caught in a boy’s house, a 17-year-old SS2 student took her own life in Kaduna State.
Christiana Silas, 17, breathed her last on December 25 Christmas day
after taking a dose of insecticide in Karatudu area near Gonin Gora on
Abuja-Kaduna Express Way.
It was gathered that Christiana took the decision to kill herself after she was found in a boy’s room in the neighbourhood.
Our reporter who visited the family of
the girl at Karatudu, an area in Kaduna south also gathered that she
was, until her death, an SS 2 student of Government Day Secondary School
in Romi.
Narrating the incident leading to her
death, Christiana’s father, Mr. Silas Wuyah, said his late daughter
disappeared from the house at about 9pm on Christmas day, and the family
began to look for her soon after her absence was noticed.
He said “I was not around, I travelled
to Zaria, but I was called and told that she could not be found. They
went to the house opposite mine to ask if she had gone there, but they
said she wasn’t there. They searched round Karatudu and Romi, but could
not find her; then they made phone calls to other places all to no
avail. So they went to the house opposite mine to ask after her again,
but they said she was not there.
“After many hours of search and phone
calls, my wife went to the house opposite mine again to ask one of the
boys living in the compound, but he said she was not there, but my
brother’s wife said she didn’t trust the boy because she wondered why he
was staying outside up till about 11pm. So she bypassed him and went
into his room. And she found the girl lying on the bed and covered with
blanket.”
When Christiana was sighted, the father
said, she was asked to return to the house immediately, but family
members were very angry at the development.
“So my family members who were already
confused and bitter over what happened rushed the boy and started
beating him. In the process of beating him, my daughter went inside the
house and drank chemical used for killing termites. She was found
foaming and rolling on the floor inside the parlour,” the father
confirmed.
He said she was immediately rushed to a hospital in Gonin Gora, but that she died even before they reached the hospital.
“I rushed back from Zaria to the
hospital in Gonin Gora and it was confirmed to me that she was dead;
then I asked my younger brother to go arrest the boy in whose room she
was found, because I didn’t want to have two corpses at the same time. I
told the police to keep the boy so that angry family members and
neighbours would not kill him when they learn that my daughter was
dead.”
Mr. Silas said nobody knows why Christiana killed herself. He said since she was born, nobody has ever used a cane on her.
“So, I am still imagining what her
problem could be that she has to kill herself. Maybe she was afraid of
shame that she was caught in a boy’s room,” he suggested.
Silas said the boy at the centre of the
sad incident has since been released. He said he does not have any case
to pursue with the boy.
Speaking further, he said: “If I am to
drag any case with the boy, I will just be wasting my time, because my
daughter would not come back. The boy is part of the family, because he
always comes to my house and I do send him on errands. Though I know
that my daughter killed herself after she left his room, I have forgiven
him. I know it is evil spirit that entered and asked her to take the
chemical and die so that she will not listen to what anybody will say.
“After the boy was released by the
police, I brought him to my house and told my family members that he has
been forgiven and that nobody should see him as the killer of their
sister.
“All I know is that I have been cheated
and the life of my daughter has been wasted, but I believe that God
knows better. I don’t want to drag any case, because I want her spirit
to rest.”
When asked whether there was any
relationship between the girl and the boy, he said he can’t tell whether
the boy was her boyfriend, but he confirmed that the boy was always
mingling with other children in his house.
Weekly Trust, however, gathered from neighbours that the boy was Christiana’s boy friend.
While some neighbours could not come to
terms with the reason why she killed herself, others said it could be to
cover the shame that she was found in a boy’s room at that hour, or
that perhaps she was pregnant and did not want to face the shame that
might come later.
The father disclosed that the girl was
very close to him during her life time than his other children. He said
she was even closer to him than she was to her mother.
Weekly Trust gathered from neighbours
that the attitude displayed by the girl on the day she died was very
unusual. They were, however, not specific on what she did. They also
confirmed that Silas’ children are always indoor except when they go to
school or when they are sent on errand.
Meanwhile, sympathizers have continued
to throng the house of Mr. Silas to console him over the death of his
daughter who has since been buried on December 29, 2012.
