The Kano Emir escaped unhurt.
The Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, was on Saturday afternoon attacked by gunmen leading to the death of his driver and his orderly.
The gunmen laid ambush on the convoy of the Emir around the Zoo road
when he was returning from the Murtala Mosque in the city where he had
gone to attend a Quranic recitation competition.
Mr. Bayero was reportedly saved by his driver and orderly who formed a
protective wall around him and took the bullets fired at him. They are
both reportedly dead.
“His driver called Barde and orderly were killed instantly, and his
first son, the Ciroman Kano is badly injured from bullet wounds” a
source just informed us.
Mr. Bayero is however safe and back to his palace.
A lady whose house is not far from the scene of the attack informed
us that a number of the emirs’ palace guards were also killed in the
attack. About 10 people are feared dead from the attack.
“One of them even tried to take refuge in our house but could not
succeed because the young men sitting in front of the building locked
the doors after they heard the gunshots” she said.
Efforts to reach spokespersons of the Police, Magaji Majiya, were
unsuccessful, while that of the JTF, Ikedioha Iweha, referred us to the
Emirate Council.
The Kano State Governor confirms the deaths.
The Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has confirmed that four
people died when gunmen attacked the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero on
Saturday morning.
Mr. Kwankwaso spoke to journalists shortly after emerging from the
Emir’s private quarters where he went to commiserate with him. He said
the four dead include the emir’s driver, orderly, and palace guards.
Meanwhile, reports say the former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano was also killed during the attack.
A source said the chairman was actually travelling behind the convoy
of Mr. Bayero, but upon hearing a laud bang followed by sporadic
gunfire, he took a detour.
However, “unknown to him the attackers have laid an ambush for him and they killed him instantly,” our source said.
