275 out of 320 Hausa traders arrested Sunday in Port Harcourt
by Rivers State Police Command have regained their freedom while 19 of
the suspects are still in police custody for further investigations,
police authorities told Daily Trust today in Port Harcourt.
The traders were arrested on their way back from Jigawa State where
they have gone to buy their wares. The police had alleged that they were
members of the Boko Haram. The traders comprising men, women and
Children were detained at the State CID where they were quizzed by
police investigators.
Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of the
State CID, Sam Okaula, told reporters that about 275 of the suspects who
were found to be engaged in one trade or the order in Port Harcourt
were cleared and released.
He said the investigative team discovered
that 19 suspects who did not have any reason whatsoever to have moved
to Port Harcourt and who do not give any satisfactory account of their
mission to Rivers State were recommended for further investigation.
"It
is pertinent to point out that one of the suspects, Muhammed Musa, was
searched at the time of arrest and an expended ammunition was recovered
from his bag. Also another suspect, Muhammed Lawal, who had been
crossing from Niger Republic to Nigeria in his Toyota Hiace with
unidentified persons and who headed to Port Harcourt without any
reasonable explanation as his mission is still in police custody" he
said.
The detention of the traders had generated tension across the State.
Leaders of Northern community in the State had made passionate appeal to
the police to free the traders.
The House of representatives tuesday mandated its committee on human right to look into the matter.
Also Wednesday a delegation from Jigawa State House of Assembly arrived the State to negotiate for the release of the traders.
